Worth overclcoking?

Thread Starter
I just want to know is it worth overclocking my CPU if it's not bottlenecking my GPU's and I only game on it?

As far as I'm aware, if the GPU isn't able to run at 100% usage during strenuous graphics tests, that is a bottleneck which is caused by not enough CPU power to match the cards, right?

If my 2x460's are running at 100% when my i7 920 is running at stock, is it worth doing any overclcoking to the CPU and will I see any improvements during gaming?

it depends on the game as to how much of a difference you will see. Certain games are more CPU dependent and you will see a larger gain while others you will only see a moderate gain in FPS. Overall you should see a gain in FPS. And it's fun therefore definitely worth it.

This is OCN, of course it's worth overclocking!
But even without a bottleneck, you should see a decent increase in fps in games, especially those that stress the cpu a lot (like GTA4).

Thanks, I thought there might be the case.

The only problem I have is, on my board (and maybe most others I don't know), if for any reason I have to unexpectedly shutdown or have a power cut, then when the computer boots back up it'll go back to default clocks and give the option of 'f1' to go into bios and work my way back upto achieving the overclock I previously had or 'f2' to just continue at default stock settings.

This can become really annoying and if this happens when my partner is using it she just doesn't know what to do and can't use the pc. Is there away for the computer to just boot with the previous overclock settings straight away after an unexpected shutdown?

To put that into some context, in an average game could a large CPU overclock increase FPS more than a small GPU overclock?

His sig already says he's running his 920 @ 3.9Ghz. Assuming he can run it at 3.9 all year round (even during the hottest months of summer), then I don't think he should get into watercooling, simply because he's not going to gain much in terms of performance without having to increase Vcore substantially and reduce the life of his chip. OP, after 4.0Ghz, 920's almost always need a ton more Vcore to keep it stable, so it's up to you. Do you think it's worth getting into watercooling just for an extra 100Mhz???? Personally, I don't think it is.

Your 2x460 probably will manage most situations with the stock 920, but overclocking is fun and you will definately gains some FPS.

And this is not stockpc.net
