New Rig for gaming - Page 7

Lol a HX1000 watt sucks? You must be crazy. You have a 4 core 8 thread cpu and overclocks like a champ and is good for quite some time from now. Great sound card, great chassis, and a good set of memory. Save that money that you are planning to spend a new rig for a top of the line processor down the road and a graphics card. Sandy Bridge enthusiast chips are right around the corner and so is the GTX 590. Save your money for these components as they will last you A LONG time.

Ive never had AMD, only Nvidias and all of them ran very hot haha.
My gtx295 was 106 constant under load, and suddenly my screen became white, and i had 2 restart. This happend a couple of times, and now its dead :/

Why recommend 3x 6970s? I would have only recommended 2x 6970s or even just 2x GTX 570s, as 2x 580 isn't that much more powerful. Tri-firing AMD gpus can lead to driver issues that people complain about.

@OP: AMD gpus do run cooler than Nvidia ones, but since you'll have two separate cards instead of one, they will run even cooler. For your GTX 295, did you increase the fan speed and clean the heatsink time to time?

Ah, that's why it got up to 100+C! With AMD gpus, you can easily set fan speed in the Catalyst Control Center program(comes with drivers), but with Nvidia gpus you need another program like Riva Tuner to control the fan speed.

Yes, ive tryed 2 download speedfan, but i cant make it work with any fans :S
post #69 of 70
Speedfan is mostly used for fans connected to the 3-pin connectors on your motherboard and even then, they have to be PWM-enabled. Speedfan does not control GPU fans, at least to my experience/knowledge.

Here is an article from Tom's Hardware related to 3-way SLI/Tri-fire:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ling,2865.html

Some games will not use that 3rd 6970 and might even make games perform worse than 2x 6970s. For the games that do make use of the 3rd 6970, there is not a big gain in performance. The 3rd 6970 is just wasted money and will give you more heat and use unnecessary electricity.

I would suggest returning one 6970 if you have already bought them or getting 570 SLI'ed if you prefer Nvidia.
