Of course, I'm not saying that everyone with an interest in photography must have a 5DII or D3X, but there's no reason why a hobbyist can't buy pro gear.

I dont think it's ludicrous at all -- as stated, there's no need for a 5DII. Also, it's a ridiculously more expensive upgrade then the lenses that Sub was interested in upgrading. Also, I dont necessarily agree that people who enjoy a hobby should stick just to the consumer level gear, so please dont take what I said personally -- but to equate it in PC parts, Sub asked which video card to get, and dmp kind of recommended upgrading to a WS motherboard and 2x 980x or Xeon chips..

Fair enough. I suppose I'm sensitive to that attitude because I hear it at POTN often. But to say someone doesn't need a 5DII when they do have the money isn't right - it depends on what that person wants, because, after all, who really needs a camera at all but a pro? It's all about want when talking about a hobby.

Exceedingly true. I was lead to the assumption that 5DII wasn't in the budget because of the lenses being considered after a bonus. Could be an invalid assumption, but I can totally agree not liking hearing that people that want to take a hobby seriously shouldn't buy pro gear (not that I have much beyond a single entry-level pro lens, heh).

I've no reason to spend 2500 dollars on a 5DII, when my 50D is perfectly capable of fulfilling my needs (for the forseeable future).
Well, all I have to say about it guys is that I used to think that I wouldn't ever upgrade my 40D, unless it broke beyond repair or I had had it for several years. However, reading about the advantages of FF and seeing shots from the 5DII on POTN, flickr, etc. eventually got to me and gear lust took over.

But I don't regret it nor do I assume it's a natural upgrade path for anyone with a DSLR. A lot of amateur photographers stick with basic gear but produce amazing work.

Well, of course FF is better in just about evey aspect, but it's most definitely not necessary for me at the moment. I still shoot a bit of film, so that keeps the lust away.... hopefully.

Have you considered the Sigma AF 17-50 f2.8 EX DG HSM OS over the Canon 17-40L? I was torn between the two but the Sigma seemed to come out on top in almost every way over the 17-40L (You just dont get the fancy red ring). The optical stabilization on it is excellent and so is the IQ, the extra 10mm is nice, and so is the price. I am very happy with it on my 50D.

Gonna rent one Friday afternoon from Helix, and give it a go with some ninja street candids over the weekend. We'll see how it goes; I am assuming I'll be 1000 dollars poorer on Monday after I see the results, but we'll see.
