Trust me, you'll be 1000 poorer.

The optical stabilization on it is excellent and so is the IQ, the extra 10mm is nice, and so is the price. I am very happy with it on my 50D.
Out of shear curiosity, is the 'EX' the Sigma version of the 'L' lenses?

I found this that looked appealing -- Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 OS HSM for $469 brand new (or $400 on PotN at the moment)

17-70 ain't too good of a lens. And its f/2.8-4. Non OS is good if I recall, but not the OS. EX is around L, but they slap it on like everything.

After using both today, I can say with a good amount of confidence that I would rather buy the 70-200 f/4, with or without IS. The 135L just feels.... awkward. I can't quantify it, I guess.

Good thing you checked them out. I can see the 135 prime being more 'inconvenient' in comparison to the 70-200, and I really enjoy my 70-200 (I try to shoot with it whenever I'm out). Granted, for low light stuff it's kind of a pain since it's only the F/4 (and since B&H is taking FOREVER in processing my RMA of my tripod mount ring), but it's definitely usable (and I can't wait to try it out with my 60D) !

I'd recommend the Tamron 17-50mm. It's a really nice cheap lens that will serve you well. I'm looking for a good copy myself.

I would never buy anything with Tamron's name on it. I've never once seen, held or used any of their lenses (although the older 20-40 wasn't awful) that I wanted to purchase for myself.
