Help me decide on a Mobo + Processor for Girlfriend!

Thread Starter
She mostly does browsing, and a little of Photoshop, I am looking at spending roughly $150-$200 on the Mobo+processor.

Looking at the Core 2 Duo, because I have some extra 4GB Tracers Ballstix and a 9800 GTX+ to put in there.

I was looking at processors like the E7200 or something of the likes.

A little stuck since usually, I always upgrade!

That would be fine I would also consider a low end quad like 8xxx

Processor wont be super critical if thats all she does, so I think the Core 2 would work fine.

Personally I would rather get a Phenom II 555BE as it would be more than enough and you can put that extra 40 bucks into a better mobo and RAM.
The RAM is critical when working with photoshop. Ive never played a game that came anywhere near filling up my 4GBs of RAM, but I can fairly easily max it out while working in photoshop. Of course I am often working with many layers of very large images, but still.

That Phenom actually seems like an excellent solution, thank you!!
, didn't consider going to AMD as I haven't purchased an AMD processor in over 5 years.

Crucial Ballistix 4 GB DDR2-1066

Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2 GHz

Also for PSU I have a 400 Watt floating around, I am thinking of upgrading my 600 Cooler Master and handing it down, or would that not be necessary?

Motherboards? I've found a FEW MSi's, gigabytes and Asus ones on Amazon.

Here is an

GA-880GM-UD2H

Edit: I think I found a better Gigabyte. GA-880GMA-UD2H

Edit2: I think they're the same, one is "not" UsB3, one is? strange... same price

Stay away from the low end older MSI boards for overclocking. They have a bad rep for burning up.

AMD mobo power phase list

and

Why VRMs are a big issue

Also you could look into something like the "Phenom II x4 840" for a guaranteed quad for around the same price.

Edit: Beat me to it

As an FYI, this wont make any difference to your g/f but these are no L3 cache procs. Basically a higher clocked Athlon II

Also Microcenter has free mobo promos, and heavily discounted ones on these AMD chips

Thanks for the responses again guys!

Correct me if I am wrong but is that X4 faster than my Q9550?
Looks like it will be the 840, and with the motherboard I am still reading through the article,

so far I have gathered that to avoid a small fire inside of her computer, avoid MSi? Although I am still unsure on how it will help me with a Motherboard purchase! I don't plan on overclocking her computer.

And I will be using Amazon since I would like to 2-Day ship it

Asus M4A87TD will not be good enough for this setup?

No q9550s are about on par with the normal Phenom II x4 quads, this one lacks L3 cache so it will be slightly slower. Yea that Asus board should work fine, I would still get the Biostar over it and the default shipping on Newegg is 3 day select so not too big of a difference.
