Nowadays, they make USB/eSATA enclosures for 2.5" drives, too. I think if you connect via eSATA, though, you still need to connect the USB cable for power.

This is all sound advice. It's easy as pie building your own. It's just a couple of screws. They have the USB/eSATA cases. If it were me, I would go for the USB 3.0 since that it will be faster and I'm assuming more machines will have them.

The only advantage to the pre-build ones are that some of them have a docking station, which comes in handy. If I could find a case that has the docking station, I would get it in a heart beat. Otherwise, those pre-builts can be annoying with software that can't be completely removed.

So which external enclosure brand(s) would you guys recommend? I have some spare 2.5" HDDs from a dead lappy lying around that could be repurposed
post #25 of 39
You can usually find an enclosure for pretty cheap--I've gotten a 2.5" one from Fry's for under ten bucks, and it still works fine. Then just get a drive with good reviews that meets the spec's you want (honestly, for me, backup drives don't need to be fast, as I don't do anything but manual drag-n-drop backups during downtime). Should be pretty cheap.

I would be looking in the USB3.0 and/or eSata direction... skip the USB 2.0 path, its time enough to leave that standard behind for new hardware.

USB3 is only viable if the laptop he will be using it on has a USB port. If not, then it's not a big deal. Same for E-Sata.

Until a year and a half down the road he gets a new pc with usb 3.0 and he wished he could get a hold of that faster data rate. JMO

Edit:

Did we ever learn the purpose for this drive? mp3/video storage, hd backup, large jump drive?

True, but at least if he goes the HDD + enclosure route, it'll be easy enough to switch to USB3/eSATA once those become more readily available/affordable. I've been searching for a USB3/eSATA enclosure for 2.5" drives but haven't seen one yet.
