Maximus Formula III JUST LIT ON FIRE! HELP!

Thread Starter
I appoligize for making a couple different threads Its just different areas of expertise in the area because I haven't a clue whats going on now, its a very off circumstance that is not allowing the board to Post.

Summary of what happened is available in my last thread but I think its defeating the purpose of the thread.

Quote:
Summary of last nights events:

CPU Fan burned out, System Overheated and locked up. I shut down.

Replaced CPU Fan, HS, and Thermal, booted up fine, but decided to go back to default clocks due to fresh AS5 Thermal paste.

"standard" listed in Bios for IMC was far lower then default, and ended up undervolting by about 0.14V. (It was booting fine just failed intelburntest)

In Bios I selected Load Default settings, and left everything on Auto and checked everything was in order, Save & Exit... Won't boot but will post.

Q_LED getting hung up on RAM

Then I tried taking out RAM and leaving 1 RAM in DIMM_A1, no post, RAM in DIMM_A1 & A2, no Post, Default DIMM_A1 A2 & B1 B2, no Post.

Q_LED getting hung up on RAM

Clearing CMOS every time between those.

Then removed CMOS battery for an Hour and tried again, this time no RAM Q_LED at all flashes CPU, but doesn't show Q_LED for RAM.

Have tried all 4 Sticks individually in DIMM_A1, and tried MEMGO each time, which has produced nothing.
I just don't understand what I did to make my Bios this pissed off at me, I didn't do any overvolting, no shock therapy no German nerd boy raging I was good...

RIG is one in Signature.

Please Help.

(btw before anyone says ah ya motherboard is fried, please read through all of what happened, it does NOT make sense why the motherboard would get fried or DRAM get fried between any of the events that occured.)

Considering it was booting better had I left it Overclocked, with higher voltages...

I've been unable to get any error codes from my motherboard or that I could at least find online, if you know how I can get an error code it would be helpful.

x.x no one wants to help me =\\...

Anyway just ran a quick test to see if the motherboard is actually detecting the RAM which I imagine it wouldn't if the DIMM was faulty.

It does the correct beep code and does not detect RAM when all RAM is removed.

So I'm guessing this concludes the DIMM not being faulty as it is detecting RAM when placed in it. As for the RAM being faulty at this point the fact that all 4 would need to be faulty of some read error at DIMM_A1? Idk...

Good god post up make me a 1000$ build it gets swarmed but I can't get a single response across 3 forums, and specifically 3 threads in this forum re: this serious issue.

First thread I got some stuff but 99% of the people reading it were making assumptions based on the title, rather then actual details of how the problem was occurred, because its so easy to just say ya RAM is bad or ya Mobo is bad.

I would love for someone to point out about what happened above there that would cause any one of these components to go bad after it had just worked in high overclock and then failed after downclocking.

OK BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD....

Just tried light her up again... this time doing the right thing taking all the other components out of the system.

and well she lit up...

LITERALLY... burning smell bad bad bad....

there was a puff of smoke from the DIMM_A1 ish that caused the system to instantly shut down (thank god), I immediately turned off psu that also some reason turned it on again briefly but not enough power to power it...

Only 1 RAM was in the mobo... ok ***... asus...

Now I need help...

Going to take the motherboard off and take a look at it but guessing it fried the mobo for sure now.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it probably is a duck.

The only thing I have to offer is what you already know but are probably denying it. At the very least, your mobo is fried. Even if it's contained damage to one area, it's still not safe because electricity is still getting to that area. If I were you, I wouldn't attach any of my working parts until I got a new board. No more expenses need to be had. You did what you could.

As for other's responding, give it time. This seems like an area most people don't really know about. You've waited 4 hours. Go get some sleep and check the thread in the morning.

I'm 100% sure its fried now, I'll try and get pic uploaded, its odd though, it was a motherboard trace and it completely blew, not sure if it harmed the RAM that was in, it jumped to the DIMM_A1 though which may be notable.

Also noticed on the RAM that was in there a significant black mark on it so not sure if it is fried as well....

I appreciate you at least posting... its irretating having 5 threads across 4 forums and no one wants to answer it...

Just hope I can get an RMA... wow can't believe how much I paid for this board... 274$... like wow.. for a P55.... I expected better.

But given where the short occured I can garentee it was 100% not my fault as I haven't fully removed the motherboard in over half a year.

I didn't even know traces could blow like that. Aren't they just wires, but soldered to a board so to speak?

Yeah, I understand your frustration. I don't think a ton of people know about this sort of stuff though, you know? Overclockers are pretty careful, and the ones that aren't always get different results. Faulty boards like this are rare, so I'd say the forum posting populous is even rarer.

But you know what went wrong and that it's fried. You just need to grab a new mobo or try and RMA it and then be on your way again. I'm not sure I'd put that ram back in your main rig... maybe trying finding a junker somewhere and test out your ram in it. Ram is cheap anyway. If you don't want to risk it, just buy a new pair.

I don't think I've heard of RAM killing a board but its worth asking about....

For a trace to blow like that I would need alot of juice...

hopefully other 3 dimms should be ok...

I don't have the orig packaging unfortunetly because when I first moved out I left the boxes and my mother happened to decide it would be a good idea to throw it all out.....................

But I don't see a requirement on Asus's website to provide orig packaging hell it even says they only want the motherboard nothing extra, no cards etc.

Considering it was a 275$ board at the time... I expected quality... not to have my board short out... I mean 275$ was the top board you could buy =\\

but ya Memory is alot cheaper... same RAM I'm using right now cept 4GB sticks I saw on sale for 60$ for 8GB!!... I paid 210$ for 8GB...

Wow that sucks but these things can happen. I don't care if you have a $50 board or a $350 board, it can happen. As for the RMA I think you should be fine just sending the board.

Ya I'm reading more carefully they just want it in a box, packaged, thats it just the board... what they will do with idk...

Difference is though there is still a quality difference between 350$ board and 50$ board in most cases, just not much of a difference trace wise between 150$ and 350$ ._.

I like as soon as i chance the title my Mobo caught fire.. people are like... OH cool lets look at that now... Instead of last night when it was still posting =\\

My question is now when my Mobo is in limbo for the next 3 weeks or so, Where do I put my CPU since that box is gone too... under my bed seems like a good idea... or in my special draw... or in a book!!! Ideas?
