RIFT []Official Short Review[] by amstech

Thread Starter

I want to get something out of the way in the first paragraph so other people know where I
am at as far as RPG's and MMORPG's. I have played many over the years ranging from Quest64 (N64) to Final
Fantasy type games. I am no world renowned expert but I do have a good body of work and achievements to show
for it from many titles.

So basically, I have an overall idea of what is available now and what people like/are expecting with
RPG's. (Also, since this game is so closely related to World Of Warcraft I will make comparisions when I feel its needed.)

P.S.

(If you want to know I have a 4800 Achievment point Draenei Mage that I've played since BC released.
I have multiple gear sets, became involved in different raiding guilds over the years signing away
many nights to click buttons on a screen! I know all about farming, building reputations and working
on skills/professions, upgrading/modifying the user interface, making macros, etc.
Nearly 70 mounts and 20 reps with WoW in particular. Not alot but enough to say I know how to play an MMO
RPG.)

Now with all this being said, onto my review.

Presentation

There are many similarities here to World Of Warcraft with how you login, load patches as well
as seeing some related news.
I had to wait for a 1.6GB update/patch but after that It was ready to go.

Once you login, you are greated to a well designed main menu.
The intro video is as we all know well done too, and the title screen looks great.

The music score matches the mojo of this game, and the sound effects are quite varied and good as well.
I would like to talk more on the overall sound score but I am only a lvl 15!
So far its pretty good though.

Getting Started

You start off by making a character that suits you best.
I am a Defiant Eth Mage.

There are MANY more ways to customize your character and I won't go into too much detail, but the
customization is 100 times better then World Of Warcraft for example. Thats all I am saying about this .

It works like Wow where there are 2 different main factions with a couple races for each faction.
The tutorial's are similar in teaching you the basics and many of the panes open the same way, 'b' to
open bags and 'p' to look at talents.

The talent trees themselves are quite awesome.
They are varied, extensive and loaded with all different types of spells and abilities.
The game uses a soul system where basically, you can learn and execute 3 types of magic/talent trees at once.
How far you go into a certain tree is up to you.

In this respect, Rift has a large advantage here if you like new spells and trying out new combinations.
Rift's talent trees are 10 fold better. Period. If you don't believe me, check them out.
Even before WoW dumbed thier talent system a couple patches ago, this would still be superbly better.

Gameplay and Interaction

The action is great and easy to control/command.
There is more interaction with movement and spells then in any other mmo's, giving this game a big edge here.
The crazy amount of spells and variety of talent trees make fights look quite amazing.

Playing a melee is actually fun like it should be,
guys get knocked physically back from your sword when it strikes, not when the game calculates the hit.
When you hit someone with lightning, they jolt downward some. Even during the midst of 20 people targeting and delivering damage!
When you use pyro spells to get people aflame, they are aflame!
Not just numbers flying with the same fire effect you have seen billions of times.

Player battle, interaction, and movement are all much more immersive, this game is a big upgrade from any MMORPG available now as
far as a total gameplay experience.

Moving along.
The actual interface/layout can be completely changed and edited to your liking, from location, amount and size of your hotbars, right
down to the map in the corner. It's like having a great add on out of the box.

Overall, the gameplay is great, well polished and fun.
Its superior to any MMORPG in almost all ways including WoW, with more variety in every aspect.

I might be exaggerating some here, but you can make that choice for yourself.

Graphics and Visual Depth

This game is hands down the best looking MMORPG I have ever played by far.
Its as good if not better looking then Dragon Age. Yes, if you can run it at high settings, it looks that good.

It looks so good cranked up It took me quite some time for my mind to adjust from the cartoonish blocky models and
enviroments I was so used to with Warcraft.

I am playing Rift at 1920 X 1080 8XAF/antiliasing smoothing, all other settings maxed.

The textures look brilliant and are vastly superior in everyway to any MMORPG out today, the spells and character models have a impressive realistic look/feel, as do the
enviroments, surroundings and buildings. The creatures actually looks like creatures, not block models.

The visuals are SO GOOD in fact, the actual feel of the game is much more authentic and visceral.
Castles and roads look and feel like castles and roads, not the yellow brick road from the Wizard of OZ
that runs through Goldshire.
There is no obvious repeat in the patterns like you see all the time with Warcraft and other MMO's.
There is so much to mention here but I only have a little time so let me just say this.

RIFT looks SICK!

Conclusion and Comments

Now my love for Warcraft/MMORPG's will never go away, and I know some of you are thinking well, Rift is not going to have this or Rift is
not going to have that.

All sorts of various Skills and depthy professions, outfits, factions, runes, commitment to PVP, story lines, varied quests with
better interaction, bosses/enemies, macros, user settings, titles, guilds, message boards, gear chants and upgrades of all types,
etc etc etc etc etc etc. Everything that WoW has this has, only its been improved upon.

Its all here. Plus some.

It's going to take me sometime to get used to the differences and content but so far its a blast.
If WoW was starting to get boring for you like it was for me, but you still enjoy an MMORPG, I highly recommend giving Rift a chance.
I am not sure what official reviews will give it, as this review was quite slender in detail on my behalf.
I am guessing high 7's to low 9's.

I left out alot I wanted to say, I hope I wrote enough to give people a good idea of what they are getting into, and what to expect in Trions first MMORGP.
Thanks for reading!

Yeah same here, just hit 50 last night so I will finally be able to run some Warfronts with my guild. Open PvP/PvE has been the best part yet though.

I believe you get the first set of quests once you hit level 20 in meridian. They can be confusing to find, and even more so to complete. I had to look up a guide.

Luckily for me I could see straight through it, put an end to my subscription and game time after hitting level 34. I've also put an end to WoW about a month before playing so was really looking forward to RIFT.

Honesty I don't know where all the rave reviews are coming from - it's like people want millions of people to play the game so they won't be alone or something. The immersion is awful, it's tragic really because the lands look so good but the quests are without a shadow of a doubt worse than anything WoW can NOW give you. Not saying WoW was always like this, it to was like RIFT earlier on.

If someone said to me, "You've quit WoW and quit RIFT, which one would you go back to" - it's without a doubt WoW. And this is coming from someone who wishes this genre of MMO would die a hasty death! Whatever happened to sandbox, player driven MMO's?

RIFT isn't going to make it big, just like Warhammer and AION never. If you're short on cash don't bother wasting your money on ANY mmo out at the moment. Hold out for something that's a bit different... *maybe* sw:tor

it doesnt matter if a game make its "big". Its about whether the game is fun for you. I see alot of things rift delivers that wow doesnt, and i see things that wow delivers that rift doesnt.

I would go back to rift well before WOW, i would even go back to AOC before WOW.
