470 sli's ...wanting to go back to single card setup

Thread Starter
so i have sli 470's currently , aside from running 1680x1050@120hz,

i'm starting to notice it's nearly impossible to game at native resolution and actually reach 120 fps vsynced and keep it at that fps

aside from the horrible heat in my small room and also the loud fan noise, i'm looking for a cooler setup

i beleive it may be a cpu wall i have to get past since 470 sli's will max any game out, but MY definition is maxed out and 100+fps constant, unfortunately this is unrealistic, and i'm considering going back to single card, and switch to an IPS pannel @60hz (maybe 1080p or whatever is standard for the moment)

how much fps would i be losing realistically if i went from 470sli to say ... gtx580?

eventually i'd want to trade my sli 470's on here for something more conveniently cooler and quiet under full load

and don't say 590 or 6990, i'm not really digging the micro stutter... even though it's single card solution

what do you guys think?

It would be a fairly significant performance loss, but at 1080p a single 580 is more than capable of playing most games maxed out comfortably (ie > 40fps).

If the heat/noise is that big of an issue it may not be a bad move, though you could also keep the 470s and upgrade to a larger IPS panel to take advantage of the horsepower. The U2711 or U3011 would be very good choices.
