upgrading old rig

Thread Starter
my dad wants to upgrade his old rig, it is a p7n sli platinum with 2 550mhz ddr2 1gb sticks and 2 800mhs sticks, it had 2 gtx 8800 ultra gfx cards, 1 died, it also has a 2.6ghz core 2 duo, and i was wondering, since you won't see too much difference in gaming, and this comp will only be used for gaming, should i just get a core 2 quad, and 560ti, or should i go for a brand new board, cpu, ram, and gfx card? it has a 600w psu, and is socket LGA 775(for those who don't like to look things up) i know that there would not be any significant gain in the new cpus vs the old ones in gaming, but i am just unsure, and this rig IS 4 years old so that is the reason for upgrading

you wont see much difference upgrading to a c2q in gaming. just overlock the c2d or buy a better c2d.

Wrong.

If he has a good board, then yes a C2Q would be a great way to go. Along with 4GB of some decent DDR2. And obviously an upgraded GPU.

If he has a somewhat crappy board, then look into a new Sandy Bridge build, or a Phenom II build (for cheaper).

the computer cost my dad about 2000 or so 4 years ago, so it had better be a good board, it supports up to 800 and i already have 800 so not much to upgrade there, but if he gets a core 2 quad(by the way he will only go Intel/nvidia), will it be able to play brand new games in 2 years? well obviously yes, but how well? will it bottleneck the new gpu?

Two years is a very long time in the life of a gaming system several hardware cycles and one or two direct x iterations will make most hardware while not obsolete,at best mid to low range. if your fathers intention is to max out all available quality settings at a decent frame rate, I would suggest a sandybridge k series CPU to overclock , revision 3 motherboard(early builds have an issue with degrading SATA devices) some speedy RAM: dominator GT's(though there's not much between most high end kits) and a 6990 or gtx590 due out in a month or two(this will necessitate an 800-1000w psu allows a degree of future proofing, dual card etc)

lol, not max settings, i have played at max setting, and a low settings, i see 0 difference besides the graphics look slightly better(he feels the same way), he is not going to be playing at 1080, the monitor is only 1280 by 1024, and even if he was going to be playing at 1080 i don't think quality settings would be an issue
