Need help finding replacement PS3 Blu-ray drive

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I was given a fat PS3 (40GB Model) manufacture date according to the label is September 2007 and the model is CECHG01.

The drive doesn't read any disc's, I've opened up the console and it was full of that nice brown cigarette ash which I assumed was responsible for the problem so I blew it all out with my air compressor and then gently took a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol and gently whipped the lens. I re-assembled the console and it still doesn't read anything.

The drive that is currently in there has a double lens, I'm not an expert on PS3's but I thought the PS3's from 07 used a single lens then switched in 08 to a double one. I would seriously appreciate it if you guys could help me find the right lens that goes with this. (I'd rather go with a whole new drive if possible, or just the lens itself would be fine.)

Thanks. biggrin.gif

I guess you're going to have to go on eBay and buy a PS3 of the same model that's being sold as "as-is" and hope that the Blu-ray drive is still intact and functional.

Watch out, my little brother bought one and we swapped in a known working drive of the same model but it still didn't work. He looked it up and found why but I don't remember exactly. I tried 3 drives all of which worked and 2 of which were the exact drive required. See if you can try before you buy.

Edit: As in he bought one that worked and read DVDs but not Bluray or that just didn't read full stop. It loaded the menu and stuff so we thought just change the drive but nope :/

edit: can't you just replace the laser?

I was considering just getting the lens but I'd rather play it safe and just get a new drive since I'm not sure what abuse itself has taken since the original owner had it.

I did find a few lasers though I'm not sure if they're the right ones. One user on the PS3 forum claimed that the KEM-400AAA laser was the one that goes to the console while another claims that the KEM-410ACA one would work as well but there were no further comments on the second one that confirmed if it was compatible or not.

The KEM-400AAA laser is single and the KEM-410ACA is double. I would have to assume the first one I mentioned would actually be the one Sony originally used and whoever originally owned this PS3 must have replaced it themselves but used the wrong model. (Or I have to assume this system was sent into Sony for the same reason and they installed this drive.)

@Mike-IRL my best bet would be to see if I can get one from the pawn shop. I would try my friends but they got rid of their old systems to get the slim model.

Edit: I continued to search and my only conclusion I came up with is that there were earlier CECHG01 model PS3's with the dual laser and then the later versions came with the single laser (KEM-400AAA). I looked through ebay at the broken PS3's and found a few of the same model that were manufactured around Nov - Dec that came with the single laser and possibly two that came out in Aug/Sept/Oct 07 that did have the KEM-410ACA dual laser. (I also checked by searching brokendawn and came up with the same conclusion after looking at the users who had the same system that came with the single/dual laser as well.)

PM me. I got a 40GB CECHG01 that has a dead motherboard. The disk drive works fine but I'd recommend swapping the lens out because the PCB in your PS3 are linked to YOUR drive I believe. Maybe we can work something out?

Also, I'd need pictures of your lens system. You'd have to take your drive apart fully to see it. I tried selling the lens before and the person came back and said it was different in size but the codes were the same :S

I kind've figured that I would replace the lens, I did another search and someone posted about the drive itself being married to the PS3 and it needs to be the exact same model/revision.

I did find however find a matching duplicate on eBay for around $33 w/$3 shipping so it doesn't seem to bad for the price.

This is what it looks like.

I need a full shot of the whole device. That's only a part of the laser. There are 2 kinds for the 40GB. One is smaller then the other and won't fit in the drive itself.
