First "Major" Build :D

Thread Starter
What up!

So, I've just completed my first build with the intention of building a fairly powerful box, as follows:

Thermaltake V4 Black Edition Mid-ATX Case
XFX Black Edition P1-750B-CAG9 (750 Watt) PSU
Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T CPU
XFX ATI Radeon 5870 1GB Graphics
2 x 4GB G.SKILL Ripjaws RAM (DDR3 1600)
3 x 500GB Samsung Spinpoint 7200 RPM HDDs

Props to fishman78 (I think that's your name on here, no?) for helping with component selection and pushing me to spend more money than I would have otherwise

The last set of parts (finally ) arrived this afternoon, and it's all put together. Next step is to install the OS, but what brings me here is a question/concern. Upon booting the system, the first thing I did was poke around through the BIOS, and I discovered that the CPU was running at 40-45 degrees (86-113 fahrenheit) at idle. I was expecting it to get fairly warm as it's 6 cores, but it seems like a bit much to me (bearing in mind that I'm coming from a 2.4GHz dual core). I'm wondering if I just did a crappy job of putting the heatsink on?

Any suggestions/ideas/reassurance would be much appreciated!

joeyac02 - Yeah, that's the stock heatsink.

kmouze - That's what I'm thinking... I'm sure the heatsink is seated properly, but I'm wondering if I put too much paste on. Just wanted to get a couple opinions before I rip the whole thing apart and try again.

I think it could be one of two things.... either its reading it wrong or you have too much paste....

Here are my temps on stock heatsink under full load

I haven't run Prime95 since adding my water cooling.... I guess I can do that tomorrow... then I'll edit this and add the pics of it.

Thanks OolerTheInventor... I'm not going to assume that it's reading the temps wrong, so I guess I'll have to break out the thermal paste again Just for the sake of asking, any tips for applying it properly?

Honestly, I gank a glove from the doctor's office when I take my kids. Then I put a tiny bit on and start spreading it out with the glove. Then if I need more I add another tiny bit again. Then when done throw the glove away. I always seem to get perfect contact. When I reseat my WC setup after getting the new tubes later this week.... I will post more pics in my build log. Always keep an eye on it for ideas of cheap solutions to fix things... I'm a cheapo and want it perfect!

Alright, so I re-applied the thermal paste with the help of a buddy. We re-did it 4 times, wiping everything thoroughly and applying less paste each time. It held steady at 38-45 degrees with the fan running full blast, until the last time when it got worse and hit 45-50 (too little at that point, I guess). I guess it's probably the cheap crappy thermal compound I'm using - I knew it wasn't good, but I didn't realize how big of a different it would actually make.

Tomorrow's mission is to get some GOOD thermal paste and the optical drive that I forgot to order

Oh man!

So I went out and got myself a Corsair A50 cooler and a tube of Arctic MX-4, and I'm now comfortably idling at 29 degrees C. Next step: Overclock

Let me know how your OC goes.... I haven't had the chance to even touch mine... Been enjoying my gaming too much to spend the couple hours rebooting and testing my system... I'll save that for another day when I am bored and my wife is doing something else so I can play with the computer
