How to test GPU stability? (6950)

Thread Starter
I'm fairly new to the OC scene... just unlocked my sappy 6950 shaders (just the shaders) and want to try to OC it a bit.

Once an OC is attempted, what program do I use to test the stability?

Also, I'm sure I'll find it if I keep looking, but if anyone has a link handy to a newbs guide on OC'ing a GPU (via CCC or Afterburner) that would be awesome.

I'm off to read a bunch more... there's so much incredible info here at OCN, I feel like I just can't get enough!

EDIT: found a newbie guide on ATI card overclocking from last feb (http://www.overclock.net/ati/675435-...beginners.html)

Use something like MSI Kombustor. After that you can check the temps. Once you get it stable play something like Crysis for at least 30 mins. If its stable drivers will now reset. I got my HD 6950 stable at almost everything but @ Crysis 2 after 20 min of Multiplayer my card hangs. That is at 950/1450 @ Stock volts. Once i lower it to 900/1450 its works fine. After that i need 1.25v for 950Mhz stable.

Awesome, thank you. I just installed Trixx, but I heard that had no voltage control. I'll try the MSI tool

I start off by raising my clocks and testing in either GPUtool or ATItool. Both will show artifacts.

After that, I run them for about 30 minutes to scan for artifacts. If I get none, I might try and raise the OC again.

Once I find the cards stable point I will run 3dmark11 and compare my results with what I previously had. In the past I have seen drasitcally lower numbers depending on the core and memory settings. If things look good, and I have time to game Ill play something for 20-30 minutes that uses as much resources as possible. If I dont have time I usually fall back on either the crysis or Metro2033 benchmark tools and run them for 30 min strait.

Nothing makes me more mad than to be in a game and crash/blue screen. I literrally have to walk away. So, Id rather spend extra time up front making sure that never happens.

OCCT gpu test with the errorchecking box checked. I rarely let it go the full hour, it really gives your GPU a workout.

Use it with afterburner to actively overclock your card (IE bumping the clock a bit, waiting for errors/ temperatures to stabilize, then bumping them again....etc)

If it doesn't work on install, you need a directX update from microsoft.

A kombuster stable OC can usually be found unstable by OCCT. If i find 1 - 2 errors per minute i'll still keep the OC that high because it will never crash a game with that few errors. When i had my GTX470, i had to bump the voltage once to achieve 100% stability at stock clocks
