Advice about my build?

Thread Starter
I am getting ready to do a build and I just wanted to get some opinions on it.

Here is my build:

Case: Either an Antec 300 Illusion or the Antec 900 (only $10 more after MIR)

PSU: OCZ Fatal1ty 550W *already purchased* - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341022

Motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131646

Processor: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103849

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1333 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231311

Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB 6 Gb/s - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136533

Video card: SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 5770 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102898

Disk drive: ASUS DVD burner

I will be using this machine to work with virtual machines and some gaming. Which case should I get? What changes would you make that would either be just as good for less money or better for the same money.

Thanks in advance for any help!

definately antec 900 out of the two choices
but i would personally like the NZXT Apollo, COOLER MASTER RC-692-KKN2 CM690 II Advanced, COOLER MASTER Storm Scout

Have to agree that out of the three the antec 900 is the best in terms of air flow and cooling. There are other alternatives with better cable management but that's a whole different story.

I would recommend getting a 460 (768mb would do, but 1gb is better) versus the 5770 since in terms of gaming I saw a huge difference switching from one to the other.

Ram, Hard drive, disk drives is spot on so you should be good!

Swap the RAM. there are plenty of 1600 CL9 RAM deals out there for a lower price.
Gamer series RAM $90, $70 AR. Go.
Or straight up with a $75 no rebates kit.

Antec 900 = extremely meh... no cable management and all. The Lancool K58W is on shell shocker for $60, I suggest you go for it.

Are you going to overclock? I would suggest an aftermarket cooler... CM 212+ is a popular choice for it's price point
post #6 of 36
Get a case with better cable management than the antec cases. I have the 300 and the cable management is no good.

I have the 5770 vapor x too and its a pretty good card, but if you can grab a 460 768mb for about the same price that will be a faster card. What resolution are you going to be using?

Be sure to get Hyper 212+ on Amazon for $26 shipped (not $30 + $8 shipping on Newegg) if you do get it
I would recommend the Xigmatek GAIA for $30 shipped on Newegg though. Believe me, the 3 heatpipes vs 4 are actually more optimal due to the placement (on 212, outer two heatpipes are normally useless)

A sammy spinpoint F3 actually seems to bench as fast or faster in most cases compared to that WD SATA 3 drive. You can usually find them for $55-65 shipped depending where you look which will save you some cash. Mechy drives can't even max out SATA 2 right now so there is no reason to pay a premium for a "SATA 6Gb" drive.

Since you're going to have a dedicated GPU, I see no reason to spend a premium on a mobo with integrated graphics. There are 870 chipset boards that are less expensive that will work for this build just fine.
Any of the following boards would probably work beautifully for your needs:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128443
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131647
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157198
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138303

Having said that, if I were in the market to spend $330 on my CPU/mobo right now, I would be looking at a sandy bridge instead. The 1090T can't match a sandy 2500K in much of anything.

For $20 more I can do everything the same except for this:

Motherboard: MSI P67A-C43 B3 Intel P67 - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...818&CatId=6978

Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) Quad-core - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-072-_-Product

How do the builds compare? Worth the extra $20?
Yes, it's worth the xtra $20..
