It's for video. Apple describes it as a 720p camera. I think they are completely the same class of still camera, unusable for high quality purposes. I'd like the iPad to have steroscopic cameras, that would be a really cool use of the form factor. however I recognize that it's not really the focus of the device. Apples success in making the focus stay the central thing.

They are for video primarily, yes, and for video they are fine. However, its not the same class of still camera as the Xoom.

The Xoom's pictures are much better quality and are a much higher resolution. No one is buying a slate to use it for high quality purposes, but taking occasional photos would be fine, but not with the quality of the iPad 2's rear camera. Even my 3GS's camera sucks, and the iPad 2's camera is significantly lower resolution and quality.

Not yet... but yes, it'll probably have higher quality cameras by then. I might upgrade if it has a retina display, too. Or a quad-core CPU, or a quad-core GPU

I'm still attempting to buy an iPad 2 (once I can find one in stock), and I for one could care absolutely less about the quality of the rear facing camera, period.

It seems to be acceptable to video recording, fine. But I will never seriously use it for that, or stills for that matter. I've said it before, I wish they'd have left it off entirely and just kept the front facing.

I do not think that the camera in the ipod touch 4g or ipad 2 is worse than a 3gs.

That is a test between a iPhone 4 (which the Xoom didn't even catch up too 9 months later) and the video camera in the ipod 4g.

Is the touch worse. Heck yes! Can you use it, well, if you don't care about ultimate quality, sure! But the same can be said for the best phone camera on the market.

Keep in mind I use an APS 12MP camera, with multiple prime lenses. I know about image quality.

What makes that unusable?

The camera will produce low resolution photos unlike the 3.15mp camera in the 3GS.

The quality isn't great, but it's mostly the resolution.

I guess this is again where hats off to Apple, imo. A lower mp camera has bigger sites and that helps in low light. Also no downsampling is needed so, better quality and long battery life. There is a lot less "rolling video" motion in the ipad I believe due to the video optimization.

There may be some time that I want to crappy quality stills to get blown up past web sizes, but I suspect not, even the above pic was *reduced* to show on the web.
