Could Facebook have met its match? Google 'to launch its own social network in May'

Source

Google will launch its own social network in May, it has been claimed. It is thought the network will allow users to selectively share content with people who are members of different social circles in their lives.

A [Google] spokesman said: 'We do not comment on rumour and speculation.'
Some industry analysts believe it is unlikely that Google would put itself directly in competition with Facebook.
'Whatever Google comes up with, it almost certainly won't be a competitive social network that mimics Facebook,' Matt Rosoff wrote on SFGate.com.
'That ship has sailed - Facebook has 600million users, and nobody's going to join yet another social network to share photos and status updates with friends.'

A failure like Buzz? I'm interested. I'm not a massive Facebook user, but it has its uses. I'm interested to see what Google can do. Second time lucky, perhaps.

I love Google. They already have our data, so it will be easy for us to move.

Just how nothing can replace Google, Nothing can replace Facebook. I see it on food in the grocery store saying "Like our page" It makes me lol.

Doubtful. Facebook is the clear winner of the social website wars just like Google was the clear winner of the search engine wars. I don't see any competing service seriously threatening Facebook, even if it has superior features. 500+ million users is an impossible cookie to crack.

Myspace was unbeatable at one point also...

Google needs to absolutely stop trying too hard at trying to take over the world
They already have the biggest search engine... what's not to like?

They must be the best at EVERYTHING!

It'll be good to see some good competition to FB.

I know this sounds crazy but I thought just several months back there was numbers that showed that Yahoo! still did the majority of searches for users.

So Google Buzz?
A social network from Google would be interesting. I certainly wouldn't want all my searches showing up on one page.

EDIT: Saw your mentioning of Buzz in the original post. I look like an idiot now.

Facebook will probably win due to the fact that the majority of the hipsters and "cool" people at my school all have an old and screwed up HP laptop or a MAC and the only websites they know are Google, FB, and youtube.
