Phenom II x6 1090T or Phenom II X4 955?

post #1 of 37

So I am currently making my first computer build, and I am looking for the right processor. What I plan on doing with this computer is Video/Photo/Music editing, gaming and capturing video from a source (like a PVR). Probably not all at the same time, you know.

I am getting mixed reviews on what I should get. Some of my buddies, who build computers all the time, tell me I should go straight for the x6, hands down.

Then there is my dad, who is amazing at finding deals, building computers and playing games, who tells me for gaming and editing I should just get the x4, seeing how nothing really utilizes all six cores yet.

So, I narrowed it down to 2 choices, because I am on a budget.
  1. AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition
  2. AMD Phenom II x6 1090T

Thanks! Really looking forward to my build! (And I know, RAM and GFX are important to, but I think I got that straightened out)

Personally I would go with 955. I had a 965 BE before and I have the 1090T and my 965 overclocked better and seemed faster overall. And your dad is right. There ain't much that utilizes 6 cores at this point. Save the money and apply it to GPU or RAM for all that rendering/editing. Just my two cents.

I'd get the 6 core again and again. My 1090T overclocks better than the 965BE I had and it's snappier running through programs. And if you don't build PC's very often you'll have a "future proof" 6 core.

I have the 955 and have it at 4.2ghz @ 1.43v but I think I have a golden chip. I'm really happy with mine. You may be lucky as me to get a good chip.

900 series for now. the x6 will do more crunching but not necessarily faster... and it will probably produce more heat limiting peak oc.

If you're doing editing too, then get the Phenom II X6. Unlike games, editing programs DO utilize 6 cores and you'll have a benefit from 10-40% from them. In gaming, they're the same speed.

As for over-clocking, they both over-clock around the same (4.2GHz).

For video and music editing you cannot have too much cores or RAM as the programs scale almost linearly with core increase, I'd go with the 1090T any day and at least 4GB, preferably 8GB or even 12GB of RAM (Adobe After Effects for instance requires 2GB per core to fully utilize their potential).

As for gaming, you won't notice a performance increase with the 1090T over 955 today, but it would be a bit conservative to get a 955 just because of a miniscule clock difference when you can get extra two cores in reserve for a few $10 more.

So far, the trend seems to be:
Quote:
GAMING = x4
Quote:
EDITING = x6

And I pose another question. If I do end up getting the 955 BE, how well will it run, say, Adobe Premiere?

This might help. They're both decent CPU's. But like I said I have owned a 9xx series and a 1090t, and I'd go with 9xx, but some other members have some valid points as well. So don't think I'm negating anyone else.
