[RP] AMD 28nm Low End GPU in 2011, High End in 2012

However, 28nm will be lower end GPUs (just like they did with 40nm process)

Instead, Heathrow (which is also set for Q4 of 2011) will feature 128-bit and 192-bit versions while it’s wiser, 28nm brother codenamed Wimbledon will launch in Q2 of 2012 (as we reported earlier).

I think it will be worth the wait. Doesn't 28nm mean much faster, cooler, lower voltage possibly cheaper graphics cards? Or does gpu die shrink not = faster, lower voltage, cooler and cheaper in gpu land..? If it does... 7990 here I come!!

...I know someones going to come out with some smart *** remark about 2012 now....

edit: nvm...

Higher end GPUs will also see a refresh. However, those will not be made using 28nm technology.

RAEG

Unless nVdia follows suit, looks like I'll be going green next year.

Edit: looks like this is about their mobile GPUs, not their discrete graphics, so I'm not too concerned.

this 6 series was supposed to come out in 28nm.

they have the architecture and plans set. the only thing in the way is 28nm. so as soon as the technology for 28nm arrives, plan to see amd cards quickstyle.

anand had an article on the 6 series and how amd had to scrap some cool new features because of space issues on the die. here's to hoping something as cool as when eyefinity dropped.

The brand switch will start late this year, I’d guess in Q4 with Ontario and a new GPU release. AMD (and NVIDIA) originally had GPU designs for the 32nm process node however extensive teething problems with 40nm and 32nm forced TSMC to cancel the node and move directly to 28nm.
Source

Not sure if this is the only one, but I remember reading about this also.

Edit: Basically means that 32 would not be ready in time so rather than have a late 32 and possibly delaying the next node even longer, they skipped it to get work on 28 sooner instead. (something like that)

SIMDs were on the chopping block; 32nm Cayman would have had more SIMDs for more performance. Features were also lost, and this is where AMD is keeping mum....On the flip side this will make 28nm all the more interesting, as we’ll get to see many of the features that were supposed to make it for 2010 but never arrived.
they didn't say what they gave up. it could be nothing. it could be big like eyefinity.

but i think that the features are "somewhat big".
