Thinking of subscribing to EVE Online

Is it worth it? I'm about halfway into the 2-week trial and so far it seems cool, but really the most fun I've had was creating this guy:

I'm about 2/5 of the way through the Blood-Stained Stars arc, and getting my arse kicked...can't solo the missions yet. So I'm stuck there. Tried some mining, but that got old since I'm in a Destroyer and can't do it for long enough that I can go do something else and come back before it's done. PVP is obviously not an option yet, nor is lowsec stuff without a bunch of older players to go with. It's managed to keep me interested, though.

I guess my biggest issue is weather or not it's worth the $15/month until I can buy a PLEX every month. Not sure if it's worth the time either, since I'll be married soon and a full time student (plus a job) in the fall. Is it possible for it to be interesting and/or cost effective to someone who doesn't want their life eaten by an mmo?

All the fun in that game is with PvP factions. You need to find a single profession and max it out (or nearly) and then approach a corporation to join. Then you can get into all the fun stuff . It takes a few months before you can just buy a PLEX every month, but if you're a miner and you play a good amount, you can start paying for that in 3-4 months if you're lucky and find a good deal on a HULK at the beginning. I wish you would've asked about this earlier, as I could've given you a 21-day members trial if you hadn't started an account yet.

BTW, nice guy! He looks like such a player

I played for 5 years almost, in the end I had to give it up, I had 4 characters and was spending about 5 hours a day on EVE. With a new baby on the way I decided to give it up. I do miss it but would never go back, far to time consuming (if you want the good ships etc). I ended up selling my characters on eBay 2 for £350 each and the other 2 one year old characters for £120 so paid back some of my subs

The extra week would have been nice :/

It'll take a while before I'm actually playing the game properly, then?

edit: And yeah, he looks like he should be directing 70's porn films. XD I tried to make him goofier but it didn't work...

You're allowed to sell accounts?

Is 5 hours a day fairly normal? I imagine I'll probably be limited to about 10 hours a week max, after this summer...

So if I do get into mining early on, how long will I have to play (on average) just to buy a PLEX every month? Any other way to do it?

I just don't want to run into a situation where I'm spending too much time on it and not enough on more important things, or having my wife mad at me for spending $15/mo on a video game...or both.

5 hours was more than average I would say, but I had my own corporation and it was quite a lot of work to administrate. Probably about 2-3 hours would be normal.

In the beginning there is no way you could buy a plex unless you are getting gifts from other players or from a Corp. I think it would take a few months to get the skills to be able to get enough isk to be able to buy them and enough isk to buy other items u will require.

I left eve with 85 billion isk lol. Gave it all away to other players except for 5 billion for each of my sold characters. And no you are not allowed to sell them on eBay but you could do what I did and sell a magazine and include a 'free' eve character

2-3 hours a day still puts me at 14-21 hours a week...I think even 10 would be pushing it.

EVE is by far the best MMO out there, but you have to join a pvp corp asap if you don't want to hate the game. Don't mine, don't do missions, all of that is very boring and will make you hate EVE. Spend a few days on forums and find a nice pvp corp, I recommend you become a pirate. Researching the corp is important because you don't want to join one that has no members, or never does anything.

Even as a two week old noob you can pvp extremely well. EVE is not so much about 1v1's, so the age of other pilots in irrelevant. Expect to fly cheap ships for a while, and mainly act as a tackler, but you can start PVPing right away and have tons of fun doing it. Honestly you won't be having fun till you are in lowsec or 0.0, I recommend 0.0 as it's oddly a little safer and it is much easier to make money. The game is not fun in high sec, and don't worry about losing ships, it's going to happen a lot, just don't fly anything expensive till you can afford to lose it. Before you know you'll be experiencing huge battles with hundreds of ships and tons of excitement.

I don't play it anymore because I am very busy in school, but I had the some of my most epic video gaming moments ever in EVE, and pvp in that game raises the pulse like no other. EVE is the only game that really lives up to the title massively multiplayer rpg.

I remember trying the trial a year ago. I hated it.. so boring. I expected better. I miss space games like Freelancer. Now that was a fun game. We need more games like these!

As chimera said you need to go 0.0 and pirate to make isk quick and pay for your plex. It is really tense stuff and not at all boring. Like 78 said if you do the trial and stay in hi sec doing mining, missions or trading the you will eventually get bored. So don't make the mistake he did.
