Valve boss Gabe Newell has paid tribute to the role John Carmack and id Software played in getting the Left 4 Dead firm off the ground.

Newell secured a licence to the Quake Engine in late 1996, through his friend at id, Michael Abrash - and built Half-Life 1 on the technology. But as he revealed on SteamCast Ep.48, Valve's debt to id goes much deeper than that...

I've always liked the mentality at Valve, I don't see why it's so hard for other gaming companies to be the same way.

Valve are awesome. They just need to stop rebranding Left 4 Dead games and work on Episode 3.

They are working on Episode 3, have been for years, you cannot expect them to just work on 1 game though lol.

Anyway yes Valve are awesome and a down to earth company which is a breath of fresh air.

Their denying it... so they can surprise us with cake

In all seriousness, what valve has done over the years is amazing and giving credit to someone else really speaks to their character.

Valve games are cool. Their steam tyranny isn't.

No, Valve would be nothing without buying other peoples' work and selling it as their own.

I have been waiting for Episode 3 far too long. Sadly, it will probably be too short like their other ones...

The team who works on Left 4 Dead has NOTHING to do with Half Life, and vice versa. The team who develops LEft 4 Dead was acquired, while the Half Life team has been in-house.

So please, stop complaining about something that doesn't even matter.

Valve is definitely a much more out-of-the-box development company than a lot of game producers out now. When a promising game comes out that they've worked on, I never feel bad or ripped-off that I purchased it.

It's so uncommon, these days, for someone to say, "hey, we're successful because of this nurturing experience we had from so-and-so, and we just wanted to acknowledge that and be thankful that we were able to have such a good experience, and to have succeeded because of them. Hopefully other people can have that experience so it can bring the gaming community together rather than dividing it." It's quite nice and refreshing, and makes me feel (slightly) better about giving someone my money for a product.
