Phenom II x2 555 six cores???

Thread Starter
Ok this is probably a dumb question, but I have a Asus M4a88td-evo MB and the phenom II x2 555 chip.. And so far Ive been able to unlock only the fourth core (I have to disable the third in bios to boot...is this normal?)

But I also notice that where I can enable/disable cores, it lists six of them??? Is this just a stock function that exists no matter what?

I still need to update the bios (i think) The Mobo is brand new, so I cant see it making a huge difference but you never know..

Soo right now Ive got myself a phenom II x3 (which I'm happy with ) but getting that last core would be fun too . And strangely enough windows shows it as a Phenom II x4 B55 whatever that means..

I haven't got any testing software or even AMD overdrive installed yet, so far Ive just tried the core unlocking switch on the board.

When trying to use other switch (TurboV) My computer wont even post and says this chip cannot be unlocked, even though without the switch on it unlocks the fourth core just fine (just not number 3...)

When trying to use the factory overclock (auto) settings (turbo V switch off)(unlocker off) It wont let me overclock at all, and just says overclock failed! at startup.... I was under the impression you could at least get SOME stable overclock with the auto settings on these boards...

sooo where should I go from here? I know theres some threads regarding the manual voltage adjustments and such which I will be reading, but mainly I'm wondering why does that turbo V switch basically make my processor unusable (Even with cores locked)?

And whats the deal with listing six cores in the bios??

Thanks in advance, and yes I have pictures coming out as soon as I get home from work!! All in all I love my new system, thanks to everyone again for the help in constructing it!!

The issue w/ seeing option for 6 cores prob needs an update. I think board makers assumed it could be possible for an X4 to be produced that was really a locked X6.

Regarding your OC/TurboV settings--it sounds like you need more volts to your CPU to make it stable. Read up on the voltage adjustments, it is a major component to overclocking.

I have close to the same board. My unlock section shows 6 cores too. I have tried enabling them and it does nothing. They aren't really there.
It isn't weird that your chips 4th core works but 3rd doesn't. My chip even in dual core mode uses cores 1 and 3. Core 4 will unlock but won't post into windows with any voltage. The 2nd core is completely defective.
As for the Turbo switch I also have one but find it works very poorly. Just overclock manually!!

Edit: Try manually setting voltages, with the 3rd core unlocked you will need more then regular stock voltage! Also the unlocked core may not be stable enough for an overclock? Potentially why they disabled it, it may not even be 100% stable at stock clocks. I would try overclocking just with the 2 cores and see if that works. If so then there is probably a stability issue with the unlocked core.

Thanks for the reply! Ya that is strange that yours seems to have come pre-unlocked...sortof? I guess I dont know if the usable cores are in any particular order, or if as long as there is two usable cores they market it as such? And yes that turbo v switch is a joke. At least it seems that way to me.. What settings have you found success with on your 555?

With 2 cores remember I run stable 4Ghz at 1.45v. Also before that overclock I could run 3.6Ghz at stock 1.325v although I always manually input voltages, don't leave them on auto if you are overclocking. That is with the multi only stock is 16*200, 3.6 = 18*200, 4.0 = 20*200.
I also changed the multi on my NB speeds from stock 2000Mhz to 2600Mhz, this required a voltage change from 1.2v - 1.3v

This overclock also increased my temps from 41C under full load to 48C so keep an eye on that.

I used the multi to OC because I can't really OC my RAM as my Value RAM isn't going to work at 1600Mhz. Thus using the multi was the best way to OC while leaving RAM at stock.

Again that is just reference as we don't have the same boards and every chip is different but that should give you a good reference point. Also this is for "2" cores as "3" cores will be different.

I believe your board showing 6 cores is just a indication that your bios supports 6 cores, not that they are there. My older bios did not show 6 cores, but after I updated to the newer 6 core bioses I noticed the same thing as you were saying.

There ARE Phenom II x4 cpus which are actually locked x6. The core is called "Zosma" instead of the usual "Deneb".

They have limited availability though. AMD is only selling them to OEM's.

You can buy a 970, no prob.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103894

The specs in the link given show the 970 as one of these new Zosma cores with the last two cores disabled.
If you can unlock those last two cores, this one would be an excellent deal for the price.

Nope, that page specifically refers to the chip as being a Deneb core.

There are two different 970's. They both have the exact same specs, except one is a Deneb, and one is a Zosma. Check back on the wiki I linked, they are both listed there separately.
You can't buy the Zosma version.

You misread my statement... The manufacturers assumed there would be a chip that would unlock to a 6 core...
