P4 vs. Brazos

Now I know it is gonna seem stupid but here we go.

I have one of those ancient Acer aspire Micro-Atx boxes that has a nice rotary controller and LCD display that basically lets it function like an mp3 player, built in FM radio, TV card, wireless sensor for keyboard/mouse. Specs are:

P4 2.8GHz
512MB DDR 333
80GB IDE HDD
GeForce 4 MX

Yeah trash basically. Am I better off recycling the case/PSU and getting the ASUS E-350 Deluxe board? I already have a 2GB stick of DDR3 1333 lying around. So we're looking at 175$ + 100$ for a Hard Drive.

Will 2GB RAM run Win 7 decently on Brazos? All the machine will do is play Freecell and spider solitaire, Skype and maybe play a movie every once in a while. If it could do DVR off my cable box it would be killer too.

Or should I just spend some cash on DDR 1 ram and try to make the old P4 dump work? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I would like to keep the FM Radio and display and all that but I'm afraid it may be Motherboard-dependent.

You can get a good card like HD4650 AGP or else change the board to a 915/945 from ASROCK

Then put 2GB RAM & add a GT 430 with it & it should be a very decent HTPC.

I'd kill with a spoon everyone that still uses P4s.

Obviously you haven't heard about power efficiency and heat output right?

Brazos takes 18W and superseeds P4 in every single aspect. It is also 100% silent since you can run it in passive mode without a problem.

The P4 has nice features but c'mon... It's ancient, and one epic piece of a power waster.

^^ Agreed.

But sometimes reusing old stuff is better & enjoyable because finding parts are little tough & also cost effective(maybe).

Because selling it has no point as it wont fetch anything.

As for the cooling part you can cool a P4 well with a good Aftermarket cooler like Scythe BIG Shuriken 120mm CPU cooler.

BTW I think people dont keep their HTPC's powered on 24/7, At least I am not doing so.

Thanks guys. Yeah I know the P4 blows hard but its free, and I'm sure I'll find some use for it. I live in oil land and we don't have power bills here so

I'd really like a Brazos but as I said, I don't know how it will fare with the integrated peripherals.
