I content that AMD should have made it clear that a AM3 socket would accept the proc, in other words, that the pin counts are the same. If they would have done that, then I think nobody would be confused right now.

We all understand the Asus can design a bios or some other feature to support something AMD never intended. But they can't do magic.

If this is true, then BD pin config=AM3 pin config... AMD knew that and has known it for a while. I think it was silly of them to withhold that information.

Well thats AMD's style of marketing man...

They think that if they hold back certain information like this, then people will wait and rush to buy the newer stuff when its out, rather then holding onto their older stuff.

Its like the video cards.

Two years ago, it was the GTX 200 series...

Then the GTX300 and 400's...

Now is the GTX 500's...

Every year, its something new, and some new gimmick about why you absolutely have to buy this brand new card right now right this very instant because it has this super cool and totally awesome brand nw feature that your old card doesnt have and you just have to have it because if you dont buy it right now then you suck and your benchmarks will suck and you cant play the newest games ... etc, etc..

...and so on...

They don't want you to keep your old Boards.

They want you to wait and buy the newer ones. After all, AMD has to make money off their 990's, so why would they tell people that the Zambezi's work on 890's when they prefer you to buy the 990's instead?

You can use that to zoom in on the Socket, it is still the old style AM3 Socket, with the same original AM3 pin count.

So if yours looks different, then let us know!

Nope it's dead bang spot on. I think that the CPU just doesn't have as many pins as has been speculated on based on the MoBo socket. Doesn't mean the CPU won't work, just means that it's still possible and even plausible that the initial offering will work with a different BIOS and the awareness that you're not gonna have all the features available to you on an AM3+ board.

As has been stated and restated to death of course. Unfortunately it will most likely have to be restated again and again until AMD comes out and says yay or nay. Or it's launched and I find out that I've bricked a $400 CPU as some have speculated will happen. I'll take one for the team if everyone pitches in a buck to further this venture.biggrin.gif

Nobody ever said it physically wont fit.

AM3 Socket = 941 holes
AM3b Socket = 942 holes
AM3 CPU = 938 pins

So Bulldozer can have upwards to 3 extra pins and still work. Maybe they'll only have 2 extra, we don't know. ASUS does though. You know they do receive samples WAAAY before us, right?

Bulldozer is more than likely done, now they're just mass producing them.

So has any one with a board on the list, some one like you cjc75, flashed their board with the new 3012 bios version that Asus are listing?

Since your confident that you now have BD support, could you try it out for us please, just to see if it's stable?

The common assumption was that AMD added the extra pin to the AM3b socket so they could use it with BD. The recent ASUS press release suggests otherwise -- maybe AMD is just going to use the extra hole(s) in the future.

I am just mad at AMD at for not making this clear. I wanted a ROG board a while ago and didn't buy it because I didn't think BD would work with it. Now it seems that it will work, but AMD is quiet on what features/performance/overclockablility/etc we will lose. AMD is pulling their best Intel here and it is not cool:(
