I'm going to forget about BD till it's release. I'm looking to buy a new mobo/cpu anyway, will there be a Crosshair V out around BD release? Because I want one. If they are compatible I might just a get a Crosshair IV.

Well that is the big question here.

Exactly, WHY is Asus offering BD support on their 8xx Series boards?

Either they just want to offer us more options, or they want to push sales o those particular Boards; or, they needed a solution because their own 9xx Series Boards are going to be delayed.

There was a lot of word going around a few weeks back that Asus was supposed to unveil the Crosshair V at this years CeBit. But that never happened, and a lotta people are still asking why; now Asus makes this announcement regarding supporting BD on AM3 based chipsets. Things are getting interesting, and a lot of eyebrows are getting raised...

By the looks of it there's nothing stopping Bulldozer from working in AM3, I'm curious as to why AMD didn't do this officially as there's no reason why they would lock out AM3.

The argument that Bulldozer uses an extra pin is mute as Phenom 2 CPU doesn't use all 941 available pins so I doubt Bulldozer actually uses all 942 of its available pin count.

Now onto reduced functionality when not running on 990FX, In my opinion? Complete rubbish, I personally reckon that aide from the updated turbo core there will not be a big difference in chip functionality between 890FX and 990FX.

The only reason AMD is pushing 990FX as the 'Official' Bulldozer chipset is because they're greedy bastards and want to milk more money out of the consumer by giving the impression that there 890FX won't work properly with Bulldozer.

ASUS is a VERY respectable motherboard maker and I doubt they would create a web page claiming full Bulldozer support in there current motherboards and shout about it to the world if they couldn't get Bulldozer working flawlessly.

Judging on what JF-AMD keeps raging on that you really need 990FX for Bulldozer I really hope for the sake of his and AMD's reputation that there IS a difference in features between 890FX and 990FX else there's going to be a lot of pisst AMD fans who'll feel they've been led on and lied to.

JF_AMD has stated that Bulldozer simply will not fit AM3 sockets, I hope for his sake that it's true.

May I remind people on here of the now ancient AM2 ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe motherboard that can run Phenom 2 and Athlon 2 CPU's?

If Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte are saying it'll work, then I'm sure it's not impossible. AMD really shot themselves in the foot here. I think all this removal of AM3 support is just AMD trying to get some more chipset sales, which is a terrible move. If the mobo can physically support it, someone will hack a bios to make it work, just like the Nvidia SLI hack that enabled SLI on almost any mobo.

Yep, I know quite a few people running 890FX motherboards who sold and moved to Intel because AMD were keeping them in the dark on AM3 support, Heck I'm tempted myself tbh..

This could give AMD a lot of bad press which is exactly what they don't need this close to Bulldozer release.

It's not that close to the Bulldozer release. I wouldn't exactly consider 4 months to be deemed appropriate in the term of 'close'.

4 months is close enough to lose them loyal fans over this.

At least with new Intel CPU's you flat out know previous chips won't work, But to be told by AMD that AM3 is no good and then to see press releases like this ASUS one?

AMD =

I did actually tell everyone a good few weeks ago that this might happen as in a PM JF_AMD said to me that AM3 support is up to the motherboard vendors.

I got laughed at by other members when I spread the news so everyone who mocked me now look like dicks

The only thing I ever read that JF_AMD has said concerning this was it would not be supported he never said it wouldn't physically fit in an AM3 socket, unless I missed him saying it.

How could they have done that if they're using AM3 chips since Zambezi is not out yet, and the Asus download page says you can't do it with AM3 chips? ...and its important to note that he has yet to post that it fried their AM3 chips.

I would imagine they're probably still testing the functionality of the BIOS.
Ummm I stated that some of our guys flashed it. If one were to go to the last 2 maybe three pages of the
ASUS Crosshair IV Formula/Extreme Club
they will find that others have indeed flashed over. It doesn't do anything since nobody has Bulldozer yet. I myself have not done it and want to make that very clear as I don't misrepresent myself to anyone. Ever.

He has said they're different sockets and won't fit.

no he said they wont support it. 3 different motherboard manufactures are saying that not only will they fit, they will even work.
