I just think that it's funny that people are so adamant about AM3 boards not being able to handle BD, but Asus believes that it can. Since they've had access to at least one BD, I should think they would know better than anybody what once can or cannot do with Bulldozer. wink.gif

If this were some low level budget board maker I could see the skepticism. But this is one of the biggest baddest names in the MoBo manufacturing world; just like you don't tug on Superman's cape or spit in the wind...cool.gif

Think u miss-read the posts...its not bd will not support am3, amd says they will not support bd on am3. 3 mb manufacturers have said it works.

Walkin that razor thin edge from Trolldom Mate. Be sure not to cut your feet.mellowsmiley.gif

And just so you know(for the umpteenth time) AMD's stance has never wavered here. It's up to the BOARD MANUFACTURERS as to which boards will run Bulldozer.

AMD will support it if the Manufacturers give them a credible BIOS to test their bright new shiny shiny on and it works. I seriously doubt that those companies are gonna say something that opens them up for litigation.

I'll keep esplainin this to ya until it takes. Which apparently won't happen anytime soon. wink.gif

And someone said something about loss of income and not too smart on Asus part? For why? The boards they greenlit are practically new. Which makes more sense, build a new board and stop making money with the old reference when a BIOS will enable the old reference to run anything that is current and able to run several generations of CPUs' down to dual Core Athlons or spend MORE money to get the same results?

I fail to see how cutting their own nose off to spite their face helps Asus cause any here just cause some overclock.net member thinks it's a bad business decision to run Bulldozer on an AM3 platform. Especially when they've been in business longer than you. Pretty sure they know what they're doing by now.rolleyes.gif

Make up what you like, AMD said nothing like that.

This is what AMD have to say:

AMD's position has been consistent and will remain consistent.

This is entirely true. The rest is semantics because as JF-AMD pointed out AMD says AM3+ only. Which if you follow along closely is basically what I said.

That AMD doesn't support AM3 and Bulldozer. Right? eh-smiley.gif

The reason I say you're walkin that razors edge is cause you've read MANY times where this has been pointed out and keep hammering on the idea that it's up to AMD. It's not. JF-AMD even pointed this out. It's up to the manufacturers.

But don't you think that as long as they get a working model to test against that AMD will follow along even if they have to be drug kicking an screaming forward? I do. I know that's how it will eventually play out. There are other instances of them not "supporting" a feature only to end up doing so later. If it's detrimental to their CPU, I wouldn't expect them to support it later. If it isn't and it's looking like it probably won't damage their CPU what do they care so long as I the consumer purchase it? Most people like me won't ever warranty it anyway. The people that will are the people that will 100% strictly adhere to the letter of their agreement *wink wink nudge nudge* wink.gif

It is really quite simple tbh.
  1. If BD can actually fit into an AM3 socket, then a bios update might work for some mobos - and put simply, that is the only way it would work on an AM3 socket - if it can fit.
  2. BUT - AMD has said it WILL NOT fit into an AM3 socket and will need the AM3b socket.
  3. What is the difference you ask? AM3b has 1x extra hole for a pin compared to the AM3 socket
  4. What does that mean? That means that if AMD say BD will need an AM3b socket, then that suggests a BD will use that extra pin
  5. And what does that mean, if it uses that extra pin? It then means that it doesn't matter w t f any manufacturer says, a BD will have an extra pin that uses that extra hole in the AM3b socket
  6. So if BD uses that extra pin, the ONLY WAY it will then fit into an AM3 socket that DOES NOT have the extra hole for that extra pin is to physically CUT that extra pin off your new BD CPU
Please see:

I am not going to answer any questions about pins, because a.) I don't know and b.) it's not my job to chase down client issues (I am in server).

We are NOT supporting Bulldozer in anything other than AM3+ sockets.

JF-AMD says right off the bat he doesn't know anything about the pins, so how do YOU know it physically won't fit? No AMD rep anywhere has said "It won't fit". Only the motherboard manufacturers and desktop AMD engineers know.

And are you completely blind?

The AM3 CPU uses 938 PINS.
The AM3 Socket has 941 HOLES.

Bulldozer can still use up to 2, and maybe 3 extra pins and still be fine for all we know. Are you doing any research or just spewing a bunch of crap you think you know?

Please refer to Chapter 1, Introduction:
http://support.amd.com/us/Processor_TechDocs/40523.pdf

Link me to where JF-AMD or any other AMD representatives say "Bulldozer will use 942 pins and physically will not fit into any AM3 or previous generation AMD Socket", then maybe people will take your post seriously. So far, even JF-AMD has said, he knows nothing about the pin count.

All I want to see is an AMD Rep to say "It wont physically fit because blah blah blah" rather than "we won't support it", and JF-AMD already said he doesn't know.

Quoting myself because un-nerfer continues to skip over facts regarding physical compatibility.

I just took a real close look at the ga890fxa-ud5 rev3.1 socket at the gigabyte web site. I then compared it to an AM3 mobo that I had. The AM3+ socket has one of the blocked-out connectors in the upper right corner unblocked. I took an exact-o knife and scratched the plastic block off of the AM3 mobo, and found that there are contacts at both the hole locations.

Now, other than pin assignment, ( a BIOS update ) the only physical differance I can see between the AM3 and the AM3+ in one pin being unblocked. I took care of that in about 5 min with an exact-o knife.

You gentlemen have any other thoughts?

wow seriously if what u said is true and it can work out with bulldozer with just an exact-o-knife then amd really screwing with us, all they need to do is unblock a hole and make us buy another motherboard, grr.

Hopefully the extra feature of the new chipset is worth the new board.
As ROCK!
