I used to work at a NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) laboratory. They used a 18 Tesla superconducting magnet in one of their devices. It had it's own circular room and double electronic security locked doors just to get in the chamber. It's over 4X stronger than any MRI machine. It would wipe your credit cards if you got them within 10 or 15 feet of the machine. I know because it happened to me and several coworkers any time one of us forgot to take our wallet out of our pockets. You could also feel it tugging on your keys in your pocket if you forgot them too.
Here is a picture of the actual machine I used to work on.
It had a super conducting electro magnet cooled in a bath of liquid hydrogen. This bath of liquid hydrogen is further insulated inside a bath of liquid nitrogen. And yes, it is ridiculously expensive.
