Steam on SSD

Thread Starter
Hey there,

I was wondering if there was a way to get steam on my SSD but not have the games on my SSD and have them installed onto my HDD instead? Is that possible? I tried putting the steam application into my SSD and it didn't like me doing that. I just want the application on my SSD not the games.

Thanks in advance.

Don't bother with that, having the game and Steam on different harddrive is just going to complicate things.

I'm pretty sure no matter where Steam is installed, it will install the games to that drive.

Or at least I haven't found a way to do it.

Steam mover. Hold on lemme get a link

http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover

Yes, it is possible, in a certain way.

What I do is, have Steam installed in my SSD, then, install the games via Steam, they'll download into the SSD.

Once they're done, just use the program Steam Mover and move them into your HDD.

That's what I do, I download them on my SSD, since Steam is installed on my Vertex 2 120Gb, then move them with Steam Mover to my Caviar Black 750Gb.

Hope I was of help to you.

You can. Just install steam to the SSD and then use "steam mover" to move the games from the SSD to the HDD.

This ofc means you have to install them to the SSD before moving, but the process is very simple.

EDIT: Beaten to it... twice!

I don't see the benefit of putting steam on the ssd but not the games. I don't think it's possible either. I use the back up feature and keep only a couple games installed at a time and store the rest on the hdd.

To be honest not all games really benefit from the faster disk speeds anyway.

To be honest, would that make any real difference? Just keep both steam and its games on the HDD you wish to install the games too. Also i Just played around with steam and there does not seem to be an option to change drive letters for the games

why?
just put them on your hdd
along with steam
But why get an ssd if your not going to use it?
i mean hell i put all my steam games on my raptor drive and my main apps like ableton and fruity loops and bad company 2 on my ssd which yes ableton and fruityloops do take up alot and specially write alot when recording and such like that
and i have yet to see any performance down grade with it

Just a word of advice dont buy something your not willing to use to the full extent

Is there a point in having Steam on the SSD and not the Games? I can see possibly if you are moving games back and forth to the SSD but from what it sounds like the OP wasn't intending that.
"I just want the application on my SSD not the games."

Thanks,
Bb
