i3-550 enough for a gaming pc?

Well, I originally was going to go with an i5-760, but something came up and now I just have ~300 for a mobo/processor. Just wanted to know how well the proc will wok for gaming. I'll be using an Asus gtx460 768, 4GB ripjaws 1600, was thinking of a maximus iii gene but seems overkill since they will never oc the chip. So if you can recommend a combo at my price range I'd appreciate it. It'll be used for gaming/school work. Kids are 10 & 12.

Yeah the Maximus III would be overkill. I was looking on Newegg (I assume you're american) and you can get;

MSI P55-CD53 and the i5-750 for $309. $9 overbudget, but I'm sure it could stretch right?

Don't get a maximus III gene. They are very stable board but if your not going to overclock don't do it.
