Need some help

Thread Starter
I'm kinda new to this overclocking thing, but not to the computer world.
I'm having an issue that I cant seem to find a solution to and I figured this place would be the best place to go. I've read all the How-To's a dozen times and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I have an AMD Athlon X2 5200+ rated at 2.7 Ghz
a Gigabyte M68M-S2P motherboard. (I don't like Gigabyte mobo's but I needed a new one and I was tight on money and this was the best deal for its price)
and 4 gigs of DDR2 at 800 Mhz

I used to have a Phenom triple core but it ended up being slower than my dual core, so I put the dual core back. However before I did so, I had successfully overclocked it to 2.5 ghz with no problems. (I also used to have a different mobo and the dual core processor was overclocked and it worked fine.)

But since I put the dual core back in, I keep running into this issue:
If I change the FSB just a little, I have to raise the voltage or it wont boot/post. So when I do raise the voltage and such, if I shut down the computer and let it sit for longer than a minute or two, then start it up, everything comes on (kinda) except the monitor. It's like the PSU is failing.(The PSU is brand new) If I shut the switch off on the PSU and let it sit for like 30 seconds then turn it back on, the computer boots up perfectly fine, and everything is still overclocked. And it doesn't run like crap. It only does this if I overclock.

Right now I have the FSB only at 205 and the voltage is only up one notch. It's like 3.2500V I think and it's still doing it.

What exactly am I doing wrong?

1) You need to upgrade
2) If your voltage for the processor was @ 3.25V it would catch fire.
3) Does your MOBO give the option to change the multiplier? if so this is usually the best route for a minimal OC.
4) When in the bios Look for VCORE. This is your voltage for your processor. It should be around 1.325.
5) Now that i think about it if you set your voltage to 3.25 your system may be rejecting the OC and Restarting applying the last settings that worked. (Just a thought)

holy **** 3.2500V !!!!!!!!!!! dude check again thats impossible
no CPU on the planet need more than 1.6V, even 1.6V is very high

Yes, please check which voltage is that high. If you're vCore is that high, do not boot....Evar.

Thanks for the replies. You guys are right. My bad, I thought it said 3.000 but it said 1.3000.
At any rate.

I know I need to upgrade. If I had the money to I wouldn't be asking this question. I want to upgrade badly, I just don't have the money at this point.

Also yes PinkNinja, I do have the option for the multiplier. What should I set it to though? I'm trying to go from 2.7 Ghz to 3.0 Ghz.
I know I won't learn this way, but basically, I just want to know;
If I want to go from 2.7 to 3.0 what should everything be set at?

Just multiply the Ref Clock Freq times the multipier 205 x 13 = 2665MHz or 2.665GHz

Read this thread as it will give all the "How too's" plus give you a path to follow http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...ing-guide.html

Thanks.
The highest it goes is 13.5 and at stock clock that puts it at 2.7 Ghz which is stock speed. I'm just going to leave it alone and upgrade when I can.

But before I go.
I also have another question I just remembered, that I haven't been able to find a legitimate answer from anyone.

Say you were to put a Phenom II X4 in your computer and DIDN'T run 64bit. Would it still work as a quad core? or would like two of the cores not work? or only one core would work? How exactly does that work?

OS would have no affect on cpu like that, it would always function as a quad core.

I have the same motherboard as yours, gigabyte m68m s2p,I have same issues like yours, moreover I cant overclock at all with my mobo, its a CRAP,its not your psu's fault, its the mobo which is troubling u,
change the mobo if u wanna overclock, this mobo sucks
