965BE OC question

Thread Starter
I have my 965 at 3.8 currently on an Asrock 870 Extreme3 my SIG rig i guess the one under me lmao i have 4gb or DDR3 1600 runs fine but not on the QVL for my Board purchasing 8gb tmw that is on the QVL and a better cooler but i was wondering if having more memory increases OC potential, i know temps are a big deal and the cooler i have is a bit out dated. Im not going with the H70, instead im purchasing the Thermaltake Frio I read several reviews within the last hr seems great to me, anyways back to what i was saying can i finally surpass 4GHZ with these upgrades let me know what you think thanks and sorry for having crappy grammar/punctuation

ram size shouldnt make a difference, but the new cooler should help. How are your temps now? And what voltage for the cpu are you using?

More memory will not increase OC potential, and might actually hinder it if you are running more than 2 sticks. Since you have a BE processor, and can OC with only the multiplier, then the only thing that will limit your OC is the chip itself. With a better cooler, you will be able to run higher voltages, which may get you to 4Ghz. What is the highest vcore setting you have used so far, and what temps were you getting with the AC Freezer 64 Pro?

Whatever you do you need to keep the temps under 62C. 1.475v seems too low for me to hit 4.0 on a 965. You may try bumping up to 1.5, check the temps and stability. If tmeps are OK, you can even go higher, but I wouldn't go over 1.6.

Also, if you cant get to 4.0, you may put your multi back down to 19, and up your bus a bit, which may get you just under 4.0, or may even let you hit it

Again though, if you are hitting ~60C on prime95 test, then really that is as hot as you are going to get. Unless you fold or crunch bonic 24/7 then nothing will get your cpu that hot. If you sue it for only gaming, you may try a 30min or so test, and see what CPU temps you get. For sure will be lower than a prime run
