Internet Explorer 9 Font Problem

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Been spending lot of time today with IE 9 amongst many other browsers. Basically trying to fix what looks like a problem with the font layout in the new IE browser. I thought this was just going to be a problem with the RC, but not so, as today I installed the Final release of IE 9. The problem is.. no matter what I do, I can't get web pages to show up properly, the likes of Yahoo, You Tube and many other sites including this one show up with blurry text.

All other Windows fonts are fine, even the favourites panel within the IE 9 browser is ok, as are the tabs and menu buttons. It just seems like the web pages themselves that are problematic. I've tried the same web pages with Internet Explorer 8, FF and Opera 11, and they all show up fine. It's just IE 9 that has this problem.

Any ideas of what causes this fellas?.. Or is perhaps IE9, like it's RC, a dud. As I've heard of other folk with the same issue.

I hope the following example shows up ok...

Opera.. Looks fine.

Thanks mate but I tried all those things, it made no difference.

I can actually un-install IE 9 and emulate the problem back in IE 8 by enabling/disabling 'Always use clear type for HTML', this will make the text look as bad as it does in IE 9, however there's no option to turn that on or off in IE 9 frown.gif

The problem is in Opera, not IE. Opera 11 renders text the same as IE9.

That can't be right mate. I've not got Opera, FF or anything else installed now. I'm reading this page using IE 9 and it's horrible.

If I install Opera, or revert back to IE 8 etc all pages look fine again.

I don't understand what you're showing me, sorry.

All I know is.. I have been using IE 8 perfectly well since it came out. IE 8 displays web pages fine, in fact in exactly the same quality as in my first pic at the top of the thread.

Today I've installed IE 9 and all web pages are now not clear (As in my second Image.)

The problem is, I can't fix it. Unless I either install Opera, FF or Chrome, however they also have features which I don't really like so I would prefer IE, but I can't get it to work very well as I can't see the text clearly frown.gif

What I'm showing you is that Chrome, Opera, and IE9 are all displaying exactly the same text. Only Firefox is different, and its different in a bad way.

The reason they all render the same font is because its all controlled by the operating system (in this case Windows).

This is what you're looking for, although this turns it off for everything, not just browsers.

Thanks for you're help mate, I see what you mean. However that still isn't the problem.

Whatever MS have done it looks like it revolves around clear type, true type and smooth screen fonts combined. Apparently in IE 9, clear type font is turned on within the browser itself, and it's permanant. I reckon this could be a registry job redface.gif

Anyway.. I've uninstalled IE 9 for now & installed Opera. Font looks perfect again smile.gif Oh but that annoying bar on the left frown.gif

I know this thread is old but I also have this exact problem since installing Windows 7.

The problem is indeed about Smoothing the fonts. And it's apparent mostly around letters that I see red outlines. This probably looks awesome on CRTs but LCDs are so crisp now we will notice every detail and this reddish outline especially on small fonts(because letters are closer) is driving me crazy biggrin.gif Winxp didn't have this.

And for some reason Firefox and IE9 are perfectly the same about this issue. However as Orbiter pointed out, Opera doesn't have any issues.

Any update on this ? I uninstalled ie9 and can't find ie8.
