Need Tips For New System (GTX580 SLI)

Thread Starter
Hi There Everyone,

New to the forum, so thanks for your help.

I just got a new system and I was debating on overclocking my 2 GTX580s in SLI. I will be running a ZR30W monitor (30") in 2560x1600. My ultimate goal is to max out BF3 in the fall (which I am sure will be similar if not easier than Crysis 2 or the like).

Both cards have koolance water blocks, so temps should be under control.

In case you neeed to know, CPU is the i7 2600k overclocked to around 4.8 GHZ or so.

Thanks for your opinions.

More vram the better - I've been looking to do the same thing. From what I've read, ATi cards are better at higher resolutions. I'm planning to get a 2nd MSI 580 so I'll follow this and see what people say.

Uh oh, should I have gone with 2 6970s instead??? I could still make that change actually...just heard the 580s were better.

Everything I've read has the 580 ahead of the 6970, even at 2560x1600.

At 2560 x 1600 you will be fine! only when you want to run 3 of those screens in surround you will hit the vram wall and need to turn down aa. You could get the 580's with 3g of ram.

I was just about to mention that! Palit is pretty much the only manufacturer adding extra VRAM for high res gamers. 3G 580s are easily the most powerful (single gpu) cards on the planet, and would have plenty of headroom at 1600p.

For a single display, 1.5GB will probably be okay in most situations, but if you want to really crank the AA and tessellation at that res, you might want to consider swapping for the 3GB model.

1.5 GB is plenty for 1600p
you only need 2/3 GB for multi-monitor.
have fun with those cards. i'm sure you'll reach 900 MHz easily on the core
also that CPU should be at 5.5 GHz

Actually:

GTX 580s lose to the AMD 2GB cards at that res when things get heavy. The memory is the only thing holding them back.

Yeah, I was told that since I am only using 1 30" it's not a big deal, if I was using 3 it would be a different story. I think 2 580s will be more than enough power for a few years...

As long as you don't go above 4-8xAA (no reason to at 1600p) the 580's will work superb. Games modded with HQ texture packs and multiple displays are a different story though as others have noted.
