its about damn time they realize that!
no way in hell im paying 60 bucks for 1 game. the only games i did that for is BLOPS and Crysis 2 (cmon, digi+desert camo, unique doggie tags, and crysis 1? win!)
and i got BC2 on sale for 15. same with COD4 and L4D2.

Maybe you guys didn't get the point of the article, but it's talking about GLOBAL PRICING, not you whiny a--es in the US.

Despite what the US Media would have you believe, the vast majority of piracy occurs in impoverished countries where the price of gaming doesn't match cost of living adjustments. China and Brazil are 2 that come to mind.

I'd be all for some normalised global pricing. Typically, games that cost $50-60 in the US cost around $100-120+ here in Australia, even though we have pretty much reached parity. even downloaded games tend to cost significantly more here than over there.

I'm against piracy but I'd totally pirate if a game cost me $100. What justification do they have for those insane prices?! I bet they don't even pay for shipping, they probably just have a secure file transfer from one corporate office to the other and then print the discs locally.

Oh I'm surprised someone hasn't tried to justify the pricing scheme we have going on at the moment. They should try mentioning how much bigger the budgets for games have gotten these days and that we're paying for the quality. Meanwhile, back in reality, we won't care. So games today cost about 25% less than they did almost 20 years ago. Let me reiterate: Prices of games have been dropping for 20 years.

On the flip-side of the argument, even though many games today cost much more to make, the video gaming audience is MANY times larger, so while it takes a lot higher quantity of units sold to make a profit, that quantity is much easier to reach.

Another argument against the prices is that old console games were cartridge-based, and those cost a lot more than an optical disc. Digital download games should also always be a few bucks cheaper in my opinion, no physical media, no packaging, no shipping, no paying for shelf space on a retail shelf.

Pricing of SNES games actually peaked around $80 b/c of the cost of the cartridges. Playstation 1 dramatically reduced the cost of game production b/c the discs cost pennies instead of dollars. While programming costs soared, the number of new gamers and larger total audience helped to offset that and pricing stayed stagnant.

The problem now is that development costs have outpaced the gains from newer gamers. You can bankrupt a successful gaming company overnight with one single bad game. This is why none of the major companies take any risks with their marquee titles.

I ninja'd you on the cartridge thing.

I agree that gaming costs are simply ridiculous for standard games, companies need to lighten up and make smaller titles, sure they'll have less sales, but the profits could end up the same.

For other games like MMOs, a lot of the cost comes from running customer service, moderation, server hardware, bandwidth, etc. So they have a bit of an excuse to have a higher overall cost to make/run the game, but that is reflected in the monthly fees, microtransactions, and/or advertising.
