daughters laptop broke-

Thread Starter
Hey ocn-
I get home from work and my daughter is all bummed because her laptop wont boot.

I turn it on, it posts. I can get into the bios.
No hdd shows up.
When attempting to boot to windows, it shows the missing bootlog error, and something about checking the cable/connection.

So, I am guess I'll have to take the case apart and make sure that the hdd is hooked up.

The laptop is 9 months old. I wonder if it is still under warranty?

hey bob,

Sounds like a dead hard drive.

Attempt to do a repair with a windows disk.
If that doesn't fix the issue,
1)take out the hard drive and plugging it into your desktop as a slave.
2)then go into control panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management. You should see the notebook hard drive under "disk 0, disk 1, disk2, disk3, etc"
See if your desktop detects the hard drive. If so, 'initialize' and try to access/save data.
3)If you cant, a new hard drive is an easy/cheap replacement. better than a dead LCD or bad motherboard.

Typical warranty on a notebook is 12months against workmanship defects, excluding normal wear and tear.

On the other hand, hard drive manufacturers usually offer a 3-5 year warranty.
I would give Seagate/WesternDigital/Hitachi/Samsung a call.

Which laptop brand/model is it?

As said sounds like a HDD failure, but most laptops come with a 12 month warranty now, and that would deffinately be covered.
