Is a server for $400 worth it?

A friend of mine is moving out of state and is selling his old server. He said it is about five years old and cost him $5000. It has dual opteron 2.2 or 2.4 ghz dual cores along with 4 gigs of ddr2 server ram. He said it is still pretty quick by todays standards and is selling it for $400. I don't have a use for it but it sounds like it is worth something. Even if it isn't i am still trying to justify buying it. What does everyone recommend?
My wallet is sad.

I'd look at other features such as HDD, rack mount case, etc.
For just what you've listed I wouldn't buy it.

Thats pretty decent. You could start up a server for your friends in games or you could throw in some decent GPU's and use it as a 24/7 folding rig.

I don't know what case it is in. He used to run 7 eve online clients lag free with a 9600gt. he said it has a good power supply however no hard drive. i did have the idea of using it as a server for simple games.

My usual concern with any server equipment in the house is noise.

you wouldn't have to worry about noise if you built your own using a regular case. now if by server equipment you are talking about a rackmount server, then yeah noise would be an issue.

in fact, i've got hearing damage from the servers i used to work around. one of our Dell PowerEdge 1U servers had a fan that was acting up, so ALL the other fans decided they needed to run at 100%, ALL the time. when the bad fan did decide to randomly work, it rattled.

What is the model and service tag? What model are the CPU's and motherboard? What hard drives/form factor is it? Does it come with hotswap or internal drives?

If it is something like the 940 socket chips then steer clear, the are incredibly hot and not worth it (they are also would be topped off with no ability to upgrade them). If it is the newer LGA type (like I suspect it is) then they could very well be worth it (Especially if you can just toss in newer quad core chips).

Mate is he said it doesn't have a HD, then you need to buy a hardrive for it. can normally pick a 1TB ATA up for about $70, though if you want to run server software such as server 2008 you are looking at paying around $999. You can get some free linux servers though they require some knowledge to run. honestly iif you have no use for a server and know how they are properly used don't bother. You can set up networks and LAN's cheaper that are easier to monitor and configure.
Hope this helped
