Computer sound problem

Thread Starter
I have an Asus P5SD2-VM motherboard which has been working for the past 2 years. Today I pluged the headphones in to the front panel audio jack and found out that the audio wasn't working. It was working before so I checked the connection for the internal and external connectors and found that there was no problems. The microphone wasn't working either on the front panel. The back motherboard panel was working fine. I changed the audio settings from HD to AC97 and that didn't work.I tried using different speakers but that didn't work Can anyone tell me how to solve this.

What I would do is grab a multimeter and check if the cable between the mobo connector and the FP are intact; they may have been interrupted. If the cables are fine and the sound works on the rear pannel, then the problem could only come form the connector. There's a small 1% chance it's a software gremlin, so to eliminate it you might want to run an Ubuntu Live CD and see how it goes.
Otherwise... these connectors are sensitive as the cables are like antennas for the EMI that flows thru the case.

In an example, the FP headers and the connections on the Antec 900 are notorious for failure. Especially with extend plugging/unplugging.
