My printer driver and everything else is the same. It says that the printer status is "Idle - Printer is Online." But when I try to print, nothing happens.

Here's a lsusb dump:

Did a driver actually load for the device? Where's the dmesg output which occurs when you plug it in?

I don't think a driver loaded since I don't see anything in the list of available devices for the CUPS setup. Here's dmesg after I unplug and replug the device:

I think the important stuff is at the bottom because I see "idProduct=7705", and lsusb says that the cable is called MCS7705. So does this reveal anything?

Bingo, no driver actually loaded for it.

I did some searching around and found a Linux driver from the chipset manufacturer. Obviously I can't vouch for it, though.

EDIT: I've attached it, since they require a customer login. Fortunately it's got a nice fat GPL on it.

Any idea what to do with the source code? make gives about 1000 errors, and the included mosinstall script says that a file is missing... And do you know if this would support 64-bit in the first place?

I tried to compile it myself. Looks like it needs to be updated for current kernels. If you feel like hacking, feel free. Otherwise I suggest you contact the email address in the README file and ask them for an updated driver.

Oh well. Looks like this thing is going back to Fry's.

Thanks for your help anyway.

PS: if a driver did install, what type of messaging would I be seeing in dmesg?

No big loss, eh?

Something like this:

Code:
[ 21.826010] usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04F9 pid 0x0180
[ 21.826039] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp
After searching around for quite a while, adapter CLAIMS Linux support, but I cannot verify the claim. one claims Linux support and users have testified that it works.

One of these days I'll share the secret of how I find these things.
