Memory for Asus M4E and P67 in General (Information Welcome!)

Thread Starter
Hello!

Im brining a conversation from another post on here but since it was inside one of the posts for a instock listing I though I could get better advice with a direct question.

Debating on memory choices on what would be the best for the Asus M4E (Or other p67 boards) I will be going for a big overclock and wanted to know the best choice of memory out of these two choices (Will be sticking with 8gb as it is part of my needs)

[ Ripjaws-X ] F3-17600CL9D-8GBXLD (Bonus matches my color scheme!)
8GB 4x2 9x11x9x28 2200mhz 1.65v
http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=375

or

F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM
8GB 4x2 8x8x8x24 1600mhz 1.5v
http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=356

I will quote what was being discussed bellow. I have not bought any memory yet but want to get the better choice and from what I have read and would think it would be the faster memory (or maybe the 2133 at least since I think thats what the 2200 would run at with a SB correct?)

My setup is listed in my current build (Phantom Menace) and the motherboard gets here today .. would like to order ram while the special is still going on at newegg.

I snooped around at G.Skill and couldn't find any 16Gb kits made/optimized for the P67 mobos yet, either.

So, unless you like Geil for some reason, I think you would have had to stop at 12Gb. However, personally, I feel that 8Gb is plenty and that is what I went with for my MIVE.

FWIW. Hope you think this is helpful.

I also first looked at that G.Skill F3-17600CL9Q-16GBXLD RAM kit myself, and the 8Gb version of the higher speed kits. Besides being different in total GB, it differs in that it is DDR3-2200 instead of DDR3-1600, is 1.65v RAM instead of 1.5v, and the CAS Latencies are higher.

The MAJOR reason I didn't go with anything higher than 1600 is due to some advice I got from an MMOG gamer friend of mine I've know about 5 years online. He is a Logic Programmer with Intel, and a Senior Hardware Engineer with them. He worked on Sandybridge (he calls it "SNB"), the sATA II problem fix recently, and is now working on Ivy Bridge. We were talking about what I was planning to build, the modules I wanted to use, etc., on Facebook in private messages. Here is a screenshot of what he wrote:

I know G.Skill says it works. Since I am such a n00b at this, I can only tell you what he told me.

His advice caused me to make the decision I did on the RAM kit I ordered.

FWIW.

Maybe he was talking about the voltages ?? since this ram lists 1.65v but that will not mather ethier as with running any overclock you will be increseaing voltages to achive it. This memory should also run at 1.5v but not sure at what clock it would be stable as this memory requires as overclock to be stable.

Im sure intel would not want to certify anything over the rated limits due to liabilty issues.

That said im not a expert in memory I have just been trying to follow benchmarks and such with this platform and have seen the best increases with any memory is with the speed > latancey (the 2200 will be ran at 2133 anyways) It just gives more room for a faster more stable overclock.

I will not be using 16gb not seeing me use all of that on this rig which I would rather improve my overclock and running both channels would limit that somewhat. 8gb seems to be just right for what I will be doing along with being avavilble in a 4x2 setup.

That said if anyone can show us up and give the best advice towards memory I would be greatfull. if it would be better to go with a 1600mhz memory and overclock it to a higher freq then so be it but as I said my understanding is that the memory is just rated for (2200mhz) but needs to be overclocked to achive a stable system and thats what im going for I would like to get 5.2ghz out of the i7-2600 on water

I aslo belive on Gskill site in the fourms that this was discussed and they recomended the 8gb set for overall capiacty and speed with overclocking in mind.
I don't need it certified as long as it works and allowes me to achive the best overclock possiable

Now as breaking things go ... not sure how that would happen unless you somehow overvolted ... But the M4E gives plenty of options and is made for this. And besides benchmarks im not sure I would see real world performance gains but its nice to have the room if I need it.

Now don't take anything I said with any anger (im not one to get angery or argue on fourms and were both from ohio! but I think im half your age )

If anyone has the best advice and could chime in please do I have searched the memory section here and have not really seen anything stating much information on what we are talking about.

+ Rep for being mature with your oppnion!
If anyone knows what the best choice would be or could show me any relevent benchmarks or reading information reguarding this and the best direction to go in and why it is the best choice I might be able to get that order in.

I do like to have the room to grow and the best choice for the overclock and performance that I can get. Money is not a issue atm and they are both reasonably priced.

Thanks for your feedback and input !

All they show is vengeance.
So guess its goin back to newegg and getting veng.
Is'nt veng a lower quality? corsair has it listed as a overclockers mem.

Nycro,

If you want to stay with the red (I do understand that), you don't mind the higher CAS Latencies, but you would want to get down to 1600 and 1.5v, another option would be the F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL kit. At Newegg it's normally $99.99 and the F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM blue kit I ordered is normally $129.99

The 1600 red kit doesn't have the RAM fan that the 2200 does, but that fan sold separately has some pretty bad consumer ratings at Newegg, anyway. Also, most of what I've read says RAM fans are a bit of a waste of a good blow job. (/me smacks Tim up the side of the head )

NOTE IF YOU WANT A DEAL!!! Just looking at pricing.... That lower latency, F3-12800CL8D-8GBXM, blue kit I ordered is now on sale at Newegg for $99.99 ($30 off with promo code through 3-21-11. When I bought it two weeks ago, they had 10% off of $134.99, so the net price I paid was $121.49.

Does that help you make up your mind? LOL

The one I ordered isn't on the Asus QVL list either, Dream-Maker. I don't think Asus is too expedient about updating it. I went with what the RAM manufacturer said would work. After all, if it has problems, the RAM manufacturer will be the one with whom we'll have to deal.

I don't know that I would send the Dominator back till you test it. It may work fine. JMHO.

Promotion code: DM15MR11US

Newegg has 15% off all desktop memory through end of day, 3-17-11 if you use that Promotion Code at checkout.

As i mentioned before, dont take QVLs too seriously.

Experience is key. Most DDR3 will work. With SB, DDR3 speeds isnt going to influence performance-- THAT much after a certain point.

I picked up Crucial Ballistix and they are working in my rig. They were not on the QVL. In fact none of the stuff I picked was on the list. Not the DVD, SSD so I agree not to worry about compatiablity. Mostly about quaility.

Well I decided to go with the 1600mhz Gskill I figure there 1.5v and it will

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231428

leave enough room to overclock them as well and getting them for $100 dollars cheaper then the now out of stock 2000mhz ones is a good deal!

Anyone have any advice on overclocking this memory (timmings and mhz, voltage?)

Now only if I could find out whats going on with my motherboard! UPS lists as delivered but I have no package and this was yesterday. I called UPS and got to give them 24 hours (Today) and that it was left on my porch (I don't have a porch! lol) So I was told to contact newegg today and I did. On another note my neighobors brought over my small rad I ordered today as it was misdelivered to there house but they did not get the newegg package??

I have emailed newegg but have got nothing from them yet! in 30 years I have never had a mess up like this! I did use paypal so I could file a claim if newegg does not respond or UPS does not find my package but I would hate to do that...
