ASUS P5Q Deluxe general info

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
Hey guys, been a while since I posted and I'm trying to get back in the loop.

I recently updated from a 3 year old ASUS P5B to a P5Q Deluxe, and the BIOS options are quite different. More so than I feel comfy winging it

I have an e6300 that can run 3.7ghz at 1.26vcore on my P5B, so all overclocking limitations are going to be for the mobo, as all other components are the same and I know the chip can handle. Can someone help me get back to 3.7ghz again? I don't really know the NB vcore or SB, don't know what VTT is, quite a lot. If someone could post what the higher level safe values are for this mobo that would be very very awesome. I don't wanna restrict anything that I was used to being lower for the P965 NB chipset or fry anything on the new P45 chipset.

Sorry for such a noob post, I searched quite a bit and couldn't find a "general" P5Q Deluxe thread, so.

Thanks guys!

Specs in sig are accurate!

Ok there's a P5Q Pro Turbo/Pro/Turbo club from my sig and in the future post your issues there as P5Q Deluxe is very similar to those motherboards..

Now you're running a Dual Core E6300 2.8GHz right..?

So for 3.7GHz you need 352MHz FSB x 10.5 multi.

Try these settings:

FSB freq = 352MHz
DRAM TIMINGS=5-5-5-15 and the rest by AUTO
STRAP=AUTO
DRAM freq= 844MHz
DRAM STATIC READ CONTROL = DISABLED
DRAM READ TRAINING = DISABLED
OC charger=Enabled
AI Transaction booster=AUTO
CPU multiplier = 10.5x

Vcore=1.xxV (what Chip needs to hit 3.7GHz,add a bit if you crash)
CPU GTL = 0.63x on both lanes
PLL=1.54
FSB voltage=1.30V
DRAM voltage=1.90.V
NBv=1.20V
SBv=1.1V
PCIE/SATA voltage=1.50V
CPU & PCIE Spread spectrum=Disable
CPU & NB skew=AUTO
NB GTL=AUTO
Load Line Calibration=ENABLED

All options in CPU Configuration set @ DISABLE and CPU MULTI @ 10.5x..

Testing methodology:

1. First test these settings with 6x multi with P95 LARGE FFT for at least 6h and stock Vcore as your CPU would be running @ 352MHz FSB x6=2.1GHz..

2. If you pass reboot to BIOS upp your Vcore and set CPU multiplier to 10.5x..

3. If it doesn't boot keep adding Vcore untill it does..

4. Then in Windows test 352MHz FSB x10.5 =3.7GHz with Intel Burn Test for 20runs and if you crash then just upp Vcore and test it again..

5. If you pass 6hrs of P95 LARGE FFT & IBT for 20 runs then you're ROCK SOLID..

KEEP YOUR CORE TEMPS UNDER 75C IN ANY STRESS TEST..

CHEERS..

KingT thanks so much man. Super helpful post! That was exactly what I was looking for, although you will hate me but I did not know there were two E6300 chips, mine is the allendale/conroe with disabled cache that runs at 1.86ghz with a 1066 FSB and max of 7x multiplier. I guess it's a pretty old chip.

I used the rest of your settings but set the fsb at 433mhz, ram at 866mhz, and multi at 7 for 3.03ghz clock rate. My vcore is at 1.26v and seems stable. Thanks man!

How would you recommend I get to 3.5ghz, which I would need a 500fsb to do, so I'm uncertain of my dram ratios and what it should be. As well as if I will need to bump the nb vcore or if 1.2v is high already for the p45. The copper heatsink on NB gets hot already.

Should I just play around with it? Or are there values I will need to adjust other than just vcore, fsb, and dram frequency?

Last question, promise . Is there any ratio on the FSB or range for the FSB 433-485 or something, that negatively affects performance? I know on the p5B deluxe mid 400's were supposed to be slower than low 400's because of weird strapping issues.

Thanks if you have time KingT, if not I'm sure I'll figure it out!
+repped you

The best thing about the old Conroe 65nm is that it can handle 1.5V!

See if this works for 3.5GHz, if it does, try lowering Vcore.

Try these settings:

FSB freq = 500MHz
DRAM TIMINGS=5-5-5-15 and the rest by AUTO
STRAP=AUTO
DRAM freq= 1000MHz
DRAM STATIC READ CONTROL = DISABLED
DRAM READ TRAINING = DISABLED
OC charger=Enabled
AI Transaction booster=AUTO
CPU multiplier = 7x

Vcore=1.xxV (what Chip needs to hit 3.5GHz, safe up to around 1.475V, LLC enabled.)
CPU GTL = 0.63x on both lanes
PLL=1.54
FSB voltage=1.32V
DRAM voltage=(set to whatever the RAM is rated for at 1066)
NBv=1.32V
SBv=1.1V
PCIE/SATA voltage=1.50V
CPU & PCIE Spread spectrum=Disable
CPU Skew Auto
NB Skew 100
NB GTL=AUTO
Load Line Calibration=ENABLED

This works with an E8400 (500x8.5) on a P5Q Deluxe. Getting an old E6300 Conroe to (500x7) 3.5GHz may be a stretch, but go for it! It looks like you have a good cooler.

The P5Q Deluxe was one of the best boards for clocking wolfdales and yorkfields. Only thing that could go higher was the EP45-UD3P. There's also some modded bioses over on xtremesystems that can help you get even more out of that board.

What do you use the computer for, though?
If you need power, you're sort of doing it a disservice running that old conroe on it, though? Why not see if you can get a deal on a Q9550-9650 quad or an e8400-8600 (if you aren't really a gamer) and try to go for up to 4.5 ghz? Should be a lot more fun...and if you manage to get a Q9650 at close to 4.5 ghz, you can sit on that until ivy bridge comes out, and then resell your old system on ebay

hate to break it to you man...but my P5Q premium which is 90% the same board was poo with a Q9550. Did pretty well with my E8500 though.

in all honesty, over 500 FSB is very hard to get stable because this board is quite picky in the GTL department, and you need to do a LOT of tuning to get it stable at high FSB. 500FSB on a conroe for 24/7 is certainly a very good OC though

I wish you luck OP.

I think you have to use a modded bios. That's why Ket's mbioses were so popular. Helped fix a lot of weird things, and someone got to almost 500 FSB with a Q9650 (or 507). I agree it couldn't come close to the 600 fsb with a dual, that the ud3p could do...

There was also some feature that was seriously borked on quads, causing major instability, that was fixed later on, by Asus. Forgot what it was called, but it was truehighroller who convinced Asus to look at it (I think he even sent his cpu in to them...I forgot, though...)

Syverson, thanks a lot man! I'll be putting those settings into bios later tonight! I'll let you know how it goes. Yeah I miss my old p5B board because this conroe chip, though old and low power at 1.86ghz, can overclock like a badge-stripped extreme edition. I could break 520fsb to clock this thing at 3.64ghz (199% overclock) with only 1.3vcore and 58c load temp air cooled, Crysis stable for full 8hr playthroughs. I can't seem to get this board over 433fsb though, so that's why I'm here...

I'll post when I input those new specs though and let you know if I'm sailing smooth at 3.5ghz once again. Thanks dude!

No problem. If those above aren't stable try with the CPU Refs & NB Ref on auto.

Once you start pushing it over 500 you will probably need to play with the Refs more.

If it will do 3.7, that is an excellent CPU.

Syverson, got her stable at 3.4ghz (486 x 7) using the values you suggested. Next time I have some real time on my hands I'm gonna fool around and see if this p45 will do 500+ fsb, but she looks good at 486. Thanks again man! I'll post back if I have much improvement.
