very good read. I've always wondered how the ps3 was able to handle a superb looking game like god of war 3 and uncharted 2. I have both 360 and ps3 and some games look great even with weak hardware. hopefully the pc can adapt a system similar to console games so we can have better performance with lesser hardware.

Have you ever programmed anything in a language like C++ or VB before? If so, try converting your code to assembly. In fact, try coding in assembly. The time it takes to write a complex function is exponentially longer. Game development times would go from 1-3 years to 5-15 years. Studios would be be broke before any game completed.

Not only that, how to make efficient use of it. In some cases the game will perform worse on some GPU's. Games will be optimized for one card or another, forcing gamers to keep up or be left behind.

We would end up with DX9 "cap bits" again. Developers would have to create branching code for different GPUs.

Same with web development, IE would not render pages properly so web developers were forced to either write the whole page again but IE compatible or leave IE behind completely.

this was an extremely good read. I would love to see what the final product would be with the middle man taken out of the equation so to speak. I doubt it would push for more innovation however. competition breeds innovation more than anything else.

I still don't like the fact that AMD doesn't push for dx11 native games that they sponsor. Even though you believe getting rid of directX would be effecient, it doesn't mean you should ignore it's full potential in the current market. Devs are guilty as well, but they are not the only ones.

DirectX isn't going anyway.

Consoles are very different from PCs.
They have a designed GPU, a designed CPU, and both are designed to worth with each other to the best they can.

On a PC, you have different GPU makers, different CPU makers.
So you have the need for drivers, and standards, and each company wants its own standars and does things differently (shaders, streaming, different memory size, cube and other).
So you have to have an API which connects it all.

And that is where DirectX comes. It makes the developer's life a whole lot easier. They don't need to think too much about the GPU, unlike consoles, which you have to write directly to it, and limited by its functions, and you can't go above them.
