New build issues? Possibly with unlocked cores?

So I just finished putting together my new build yesterday (sig rig) and the asus motherboard already had the core unlocker switch on, so it booted as a B65 quad.

The next time I started it up, it got about a second into the boot process and then died. No response from the power button... I just could not turn it back on again.

I thought the PSU might have died... I tried another PSU and still nothing. I thought the mobo might have fried. Reconnected the old PSU, it started right up.

I began a download of a game off steam and went to bed. When I got up for a drink of water, it was shut down. Could not turn it back on again.

This time I reset the CMOS and it powered right back up, has been running for about an hour now with no issues.

CPU temp is 20-22c under mild use (typing this and downloading via steam)

Could these symptoms be from an unstable core unlock? I didn't think that would prevent the computer from turning on at all... I thought it would at least turn on for a bit then fail.

Any thoughts?

It could be a failed core. Imho when your rig will start you should check the unlocked CPU as any with any overclock, instabilities should show up. It is possible the rig doesn't turn on with a failed core, it's like wanting to start with one CPU out of 4 failed. There's a chance the BIOS/OS decides to use exactly that core at that moment and if the bug is severe enough, it won't start.

Have you properly applied the standoffs and everything... make sure nothing is possibly shorting and all connections from PSU are tight?

Also, HEC low end PSU with a 6950..... do not trust?

If your worried about stability run Prime 95 and if Windows doesn't crash after like an hour you're probably safe, 24 hour run guarantees stability.

I'd recheck the wiring on your Power switches. OR possibly a short somewhere.

If you must, build the computer outside of the case on a piece of wood or something. You can actually start the motherboard by touching the Power SW w/ a screw driver.

Nor do I... it'll be the first thing to be replaced as soon as possible.

As for the standoffs, the case has the raised bracket sort of things in lieu of standoffs. I've never seen one like it, but it appears to be working.

Double checked the power connections, cable management was done pretty well.

As long as things run stable for a while on the stock 2 cores, I'll check the other two one at a time for stability...

Thanks guys
