Upgrading from 460 to 470, can psu be a bottleneck?

Thread Starter
I just the got the 460, but I think I'm going back today to exchange it for a 470. The gtx480 is just more than I want to spend.

My question is this, can a psu run a card but not to it's fullest? Or do video cards either work or not. The recomended minimum psu is 550w, which is what I have. Do they work similar to gas in a car? If you put lower octane gas in you actually lose power? Or is it just the card with run or not?

Make sense? If not, sorry. It does in my head.

i suggest upgrading your psu. if minimum power is 550w, then you cant run maximum power. upgrade to at least a 650 or something like that.

you can pick up 480s cheaper than 470 at scan co uk
assuming your 945 is 95w,your psu will easily be up to the job of running a 470

Get a good 650w power supply. The XFX 650w Core Edition is really good. If you want a modular one then go for the Green Edition. Worth it for its price. I know many people using it with no problems.

fish around for a 480 perhaps, im sure there are some cheap ones that you might be interested...
[newegg $299] [overclockers £199]

470 is not that great an overclocker to be honest, if anything you might as well keep the 460 and overclock it to the max, you can run it slightly faster than a stock 470 yet still at lower temps and noise

your psu will be fine and a 470 is the choice id make I have owned both 460/470.

Oh, bollocks!

The 470 is one of the best (if not THE best) OC'ing cards ever made. My cards OC from 607c to 855c on air ... if you do the math, that's like a +40% OC. Try to find me ANY other card that can be OC'd 40% on air?

And the scaling from the OC is also great ... I get around a 33% boost in FPS from that OC.

To answer the OP's question ... the only way a PSU could BN your card is if it couldn't produce enough power to allow your card to be stable at higher volts and clocks.

IOW, you'll get the exact same performance at the same clocks no matter what PSU you use. But if your PSU is too crappy, you might not be able to hit the highest volts/clocks that your card COULD (with adequate clean power) without instability.

Well thank you for that. I might just see what I can do with the 460 first. If I can get decent results, it's worth keeping since paying more for a 470/80 would also include buying a new psu. Guess we'll see. I already know what fps I get with the card stock... although the pny xlr8 is already overclocked some.

Anyone with experience with this card or are all 460 basically the same? I'm curious as to what kind of oc numbers I could get on air, and stock volts I possible.

Right now I just have th EVGA precision installed, but I've been reading about some msi program.

First off all... why are you upgrading for a 460 to a 470? why not get a 480 or a 570 man? But yeah like some other posts, 650w would cut it. Corsair, Seasonic or XFX

I'll just point out that I have two and it's not that they're good or bad per se, it's that they're about as hit-and-miss as any card I know of. One of mine does 875 for benches on water (1.15-1.2V, I forget) but OCP prevents me from getting above 750 core stable 24/7 at 1.05V (Trust me, I did it methodically and it needs it). The second is .937V at stock and can match the clocks of the other watercooled card on stock voltage and on air cooling. They are unpredictable OCers and I wouldn't hesitate to say that the first card's max 24/7 OC is a crock of ****
