Another 5870 2GB or a 6970?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I want to know what would be a better upgrade path either sell my Gigabyte 5870 2GB and get a 6970 which would cost me $150.00 after selling it for $200 or to just buy another 5870 2GB and go crossfire? How well does the 5870 scale in crossfire compared to a single 6970 or later for that matter two 6970s?

Thanks.

I'd consider getting a 6950 instead of a 6970, although I can't offer much advice on the 5870

Can you still flash them to 6970s?

I know this post is a little old, however I wanted to search for my issue before posting a new topic.

Any way i to have a single 5870 1GB card. Its cheaper to buy one more 5870 than a 6970. So will I see better performance out of two 5870's vs a single 6970? And no i don't want to buy a 6950 and unlock it .

PS: i have not been able to find any benchmarks of 5970 CF VS 6970.

You should get better results with the other 5870. I would get the 1 6970 because it can max out most games are reasonable resolutions, and when THAT becomes obsolete you can just get another in the future....

If you look on ebay and other places, crazy people are paying 200 bucks and up for 5870s. I'd sell the it and add 50 bucks more for a 6950.

If it were my money, I'd go with the 6990, grab 2 of them and go Quad-Fire.

I say no. Quad-SLI and Quad-CF is just a headache waiting to happen. Too many driver problems and scaling issues with quad-GPUs.

With one 24" monitor I would stick with your single 5870 until the 7-Series comes out.

Unless your rolling in dough, then I would upgrade to the newest Gen like mentioned above.
