Stick it out with the core 2 duo? - Page 2

Q9550 worth the premium over Q6600, assuming used prices? My biggest worry with the Q6600 is not having the OC skill to get it to respectable speeds.

For gaming I don't see a big difference between:

E6400@3.2 ghz + 8800 GTS 512mb
12920 3DMark06
vs

Q6600 @ 3.3 ghz + XFX 5770 1 ghz
16203

Yes, comparable performance to an i7 sometimes.

Depending on the motherboard/ram, it might OC well. Usually 3.0Ghz is the first step, I tried before but it might have been user error and I got bsods :[

first off, do you have a motherboard suitable for overclocking a quad?

that'll work. look at getting a used Q9450 or Q9550 if you want to upgrade.

or just sell and move up to an 1156 or 1155 system

For the prices of an upgrade to a q9xxx i'd sell your core 2 + mb for a 1155 and get a 2500k
post #18 of 28
That Q6600 should easily get into the 3ghz range with no issue. I have my C2D OC'd to 3.5 ghz and its running strong. For cooling a Xigmatek Dark Knight should do the trick and it won't be overly expensive.

Just pulled the trigger on a Q9550 e0 for $200 shipped. The new CPU and GTX 460 1GB should be like a whole new machine, and they both have enough OC potential to last me into early 2012 I think.

In games like GTA IV you will, big time. Also, even quads arent used to their full potential in gaming so you cant really judge the performance with a game that is only dual core optimized. GTA IV can spike up to 4 core use. Also, extra VRAM=higher resolution and more textures. Sorry for sounding like I think your a noob but what you got there would make anyboy notice a large difference in performance (Unless they're blind)
