Well i'm not upgrading for nothing so graphics DO matter.

But then Minecraft proves once again that you dont need crazy graphics.

Minecraft was designed that way purposely and in a different category. I wouldn't compare its visuals to BF3, so I wouldn't use Minecraft as an example when speaking about todays AAA title games.

We are talking about games in the same category like CoD, Crysis, BF etc.

I like Dwarf Fortress. Would I like to have awesome gfx on it ? You bet I would. Lack of it does not prevent me playing it though if the game is good enough.

I was playing Final Fantasy VII during the summer. My roomate walked in and asked me why I was playing "Such a ****ty game." He didn't even know what game I was playing, he completely judged the game by the gfx.

Personally, as much as I like good graphics, I do not believe they are necessary to make a game good. If they are worried about losing sales over a screenshot they should pitch it with details instead of screens.

The way I see it, better graphics is never a bad thing so long as they don't place the graphics over the quality or content of the gameplay.

To roughly quote one of the lead developers of FFXIII "We would love to do a FFVII remake... but the reality is that to remake FFVII with the kind of graphics you see in FFXIII, it would take us 6-8 years to complete the project, because the game is just so big..." - This sort of exemplifies how games nowadays are losing out on content because of how much of a focus developers put on the graphics.

I'd rather play Chrono Trigger than half of the beautifully rendered games that are out today!

I always say that gameplay is more important then graphics, but i'll be honest and say that a new game with poor graphics can often put me off.

But I guess this article is more about graphics mattering in the actual sale of a game, which I would have to agree with.
This why a lot of old games had great front covers. Whereas now the actual game graphics make a cover redundant.

For me, graphical detail does matter. I didn't shell out a bunch of money building my rig to sit around and play solitaire in eyefinity. Chances are, if a game comes out and it doesn't look that great, I would likely pass on it at first unless it's a continuation of a series I have played before. That's not to say that I wouldn't come back to it after reading reviews or possibly playing a demo of it, as that happens quite often. I would love to have both, graphics and an awesome story with depth, that you could become immersed in for hours on end. Unfortunately, that combination rarely happens.

I wouldn't compare any visuals to BF3 because the visuals look crap.

MW2 is still the best looking FPS game and I don't care how anyone tries to cover it, it's the truth regardless.

Sure, minecraft isn't a popular FPS, but it provides equal immersion and has some SERIOUS staying power just because of its sandbox nature.
