[CVG]Bethesda: If you say graphics don't matter, you're probably lying - Page 15

I think we can all agree there were better games in the 90s that held our attention longer. There are a few games in the early 2000's that are still played today on the PC because of awesome gameplay i.e. Counter Strike. There has been a lot of rinse and repeat the last five years, due to consoles leading the market. As consoles age and PC becomes the lead platform again, gameplay quality will improve because PC games require higher levels of interaction and immersion. The next few years will be great for PC gamers, starting with the awesome gameplay and visuals of BF3.

You see what I don't agree is to put the blame on consoles on the fall in quality, it's just that gaming in general has became really mainstream, and of course most people will play on the easily to maintain devices, the consoles, consoles always had a much bigger market and it never threatened the PC market before, different games were produced for each platforms, it's just that with the move for the casual crowd especially those last few years, games tend to be dumbed down.

The arrival of the Playstation was the first step, and while we can all agree that it had a lot of fantastic games, "hardcore" gamers (has much as I hate this word) felt that our traditionnal gaming was slowly being destroyed, wether you're a PC or console gamers, a lot of people on OCN seem to think that "hardcore" gaming is reserved to PC which is a load of BS.

Graphics don't matter. What catches my eye are any elements that indicate gameplay mechanics, as the only time I really bother with screenshots is when the game is still a ways off and videos/in-depth previews aren't available. HUD, menus, level design, dialogue via subtitles, etc. can all give away juicy details on battle systems, inventory/equipment, linearity and so on.

I didn't start playing Contra 16 years ago because it's ultra realistic 8-bit graphics blew my 5-year-old mind. That mindset didn't change when I got a PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, etc. Hasn't changed now just because games look better.

Then again I still consider many 8/16-bit games to be easy on the eyes. A handful of PlayStation games still look good. Wii doesn't make me want to scoop my eyes out with a spoon, PS3/Xbox 360 games are gorgeous and PC kicks it up a notch, but I won't play any of 'em because they're pretty.

The article is right, and it's not addressed to people here, but to the nutjobs on gamefaqs.com and all the fanboy sites that take the "gameplay>graphics" law too far and hate on good graphics, claiming that any game with good graphics has no good gameplay.

There has been a lot of rinse and repeat. I owned many consoles and it came to a point were I was buying the same games every 1-2 years. Every big game I hear announced is a Part 2, 3, 4 etc. of the series. Over and over again. Since consoles are the lead platform for many games these days, it has to affect the quality of PC games. You think the PC experience has been enhanced over the last five years because of consoles? With 3-5 hour singleplayer campaigns with hyped up multiplayer features and $60 price tags, I don't see how they did. I'm getting tired of rinse and repeat nature of the video game industry. We need new IPs with more innovative gameplay and visuals which the PC can achieve, instead of waiting to see what MS and Sony will do for the next console before we move forward.

that's all.
Look at the Intellivision, it's just a white rectangle on a black screen.

If the gameplay is as good as I suspect it will be, no, I wouldn't.

Not really either, am I the only person in the world who sees a certain author or an interesting title (Generally you can get a decent idea of the genre/type of the book from the title) and then reads the blurb on the back for books? It's the same with games, I look at the cover artwork and check out a few gameplay videos and reviews, I don't care if it looks like Pong or it looks like Crysis.

I'm fairly sure if all games looked like minecraft it would get old fast. Minecraft gets away with it because it suits the playing style.

The blockiness of the landscape, yes, that would get old fast due to the fact you'd have to constantly jump up and down stuff, not graphics related though, the tiny, pixellated textures? Nah, I wouldn't care if Oblivion was like that, nor Skyrim.
