overclocking 6850's

Thread Starter
I am running 2 x sapphire 6850's in crossfire mode
I figured putting them to 850/1200 wouldn't be too stressful. I went into a game of crysis 2 demo and it was running amazingly smooth, the temperature didn't go above 75 degrees... after the game though in the menu's I noticed some discoloration in some areas of the screen so i immediately moved down to 825/1150 which i haven't had issues with as of yet. This is using CCC, would TrixX be safer to use?

Also, I tried to use TrixX once; and everytime I clicked apply, even just doing an increment of 10mhz my system would lock up...

From what I have read, 850/1200 should be quite easy to clock to... am i doing something wrong?

You need to disable UPLS when using Trixx to overclock a crossfire setup. I think the most recent version even has the option built-in.

It's funny but I actually had some problems with a clients computer who used a 6850.

He asked me to OC it because it had the asus direct CU coolers on it, and temps were really really low.

So I did about a 10% OC on the card (exact clocks I don't remember), and stressed it for about 8 hours and didn't notice any problems. SO i brought it to him and a week later I got a call saying the card was discoloring and artifacting.

I'm not sure if its just 6850's in general, even when I put it back at stock settings it still had the same problem.

Guru3d was only able to get their sample to 897/1100: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon...6870-review/21

Every card is different. You shouldn't just start plugging in numbers that you heard someone else use. Take it slow. I usually start with core clock and raise it 10MHz at a time until it's unstable. Then lower it 10-20MHz. After that, I bring the memory up 20MHz at a time until it's unstable. Then back it down 20-40MHz.
