Which temps should I care about?

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm just starting out. I'm using hardwareMonitor for temp info. It records my cores at around 18C which seems abit low considering thats a little lower than ambient (at 19-20).

Figured out which temp was which by comparing to BIOS.

CPU temp is around 37 at idle
case "system" or mobo temp is around 42 at idle
and temp02 is also 42 at idle tho not sure what context.

Is it the core temps or the "CPU" that need to stay below the 75C limit on my CPU?

Thanks for your help.

Both.
Your CPU on the whole should stay below 62C.
On HW monitor you should worry about TMPIN0 and TMPIN1 as they're the CPU and Motherboard temp. Though it switches depending on the board.

The key temperature is your CPU core temps on max load. If you run prime95 or any other stress tests, you want to make sure your temperatures on all your cores never exceed either 70, 75 or 80. Some people have different comfort zones, I like to stay under 80.

I've already had a few forays into the 100deg range when using stock cooling and heavy sustained load... since my core temps are under-reported, I'll stick to a low limit like 70. Kinda paranoid that I've already hurt the little guy.

On Gigabyte mobos, TMPIN2 is typically VRM temps. 42 idle sounds good. What are the load temps?

Great insight Concorde! It seems that as I take Vcore higher, temp2 followed! Great that they have a temp sensor there. My mobo is 4+1 power so I'm worried about the MOSFET temperatures.

at idle it seems around 42/43C. At load it soars to 51C, about as high as the CPU.

Vcore is 1.475. I have touched nothing else and have made my processor run at 3.1Ghz (from 2.7) with the multiplier. 3.2 seems to fail always and I don't want to send more volts thru the "subpar" power system.

Is 1.475V high for a 4+1 system? Can I go higher if the temps stay below 60 or so? Where do you draw the line on the voltage regulator?

I also have all power saving features on. Vreg, c1e, coolNquiet etc.

Already ran a cinebench and got a 14% improvement on stock! I'll prime95 it overnight.

51 C is good for VRMs. So long as it's within a few degrees of the processor, you should be good.

Unlike my mobo, which has its VRMs at 61 C idle and 85 C load... *grumble*3+1*grumble* I am in serious need of a new mobo.

Oh, and if you're worried about the MOSFET temps, go ahead and buy a set of MOSFET sinks: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-011-_-Product
They'll keep the MOSFETs nice and cool.

Thanks Concorde! I'm feeling better already about leaving it on Prime all night!

Last question though: is temperature the only thing to worry about? If everything stays nice and cool, does that mean I can take voltages as high as I want?
