I RMA'd my NH-14 because the base was actually concave. I could put a precision straightedge across it and see light through the middle of the base and I could see where the straightedge touched on either side. In theory, the base should be completely flat or slightly convex. I thought about lapping mine, but then I decided not to lap it since it cost me $90. I could have had a bad one though and yours could be fine. Definitely check it for flatness first.
When I did have mine, I tried two Akasa Viper 120 mm fans (83 CFM, 2.98 mm H20 static pressure) and got a couple degrees better temps, so you may want to try higher CFM fans.
