Single Prime95 fail at 10+ hours?

Thread Starter
Good evening all,

I'm fairly new to overclocking, but here are my specs to start off. I'm overclocking a

Core i7 -870 2.93 Ghz stock to 3.8 ghz on an Asus P7P55D-E Pro

using

Bclock: 181
Multiplier: 21
Vcore: 1.25
IMC: 1.13125
DRAM: 1.5
PLL: 1.8
PCH: 1.0625

RAM (gskill ripjaws 1600, 4x2gb) is running at 1450 with 9-9-9-24 timings.

Anyway, to my question...I set up this overclock yesterday, and set it to run Prime95 blend overnight and through my workday. I've been told from various sources that 6-8 hours is usually sufficient to determine stability, but I decided to let it run anyway. When I got home today, I found that worker 3 had a rounding error at 10 hours, 34 minutes, but the other 7 threads were still running at 18+ hours. Realtemp tells me that the CPU only reached 71C at peak. I'm not really familiar with what else to do at this point, so if some of you guys could advise me on if I should worry about this at all, adjust voltages, additional tests to run (I've done 10 runs of Linx so far, probably doing memtest86 later tonight) I'd really apprciate it.

Thanks much,

Justin

first thing's first, and I gotta ask... Did you try running prime using absolute STOCK settings? If not, please do, and report.

I did for 8 hours without issue.

I'd say your good to go! Since your memory is underclocked, you'd get a better reading if you ran the small fft test (top choice), on your cpu overclock. The "Small FFT" test will stress your cpu better.
You also need to watch your temps!
What cpu cooler are you using???

Let's solve this, start playing, and do it for 6 hours. if you won't get a bsod, then you're good to go

Bad advice. The minute he starts video encoding, doing anything 100% load he will BSOD

He's already done that, and went for 10-1/2 hours.

That has already taken his system far past, what any game could do.

There is a good possibility he will be fine. Remember when overclocking, we all fail by forgetting about infinity. Infinity is stuff we have no control over. A good example is the temperature in the house at different times of the day. I say 8 hours is fine, some say 24 hours. Do other cpu intensive things like video encode, play a game, fold, etc.

Get the picture?

Bump your CPU voltage up a notch. Run it again see if you pass the 10 hour, 34 minute mark.
Also make sure to leave the computer alone while p95 is running.
Doing other various things during the stress test steals clock cycles.

I would say bring the CPU voltage up to 1.3, but your temps may get hotter. I would also enable Load Line calibration (move it from "Auto" to enabled) and try moving the IMC voltage up also. I believe IMC voltage can be as high as 1.8v. Are you running the 1602 bios? Also, see how your settings are when running Intel stress tests.
